Neighbour nonstop smoking pot

When we moved in last July I noticed next door neighbour smokes pretty strong skunk quite regularly through the day (starting at 7.30, then probably 3 or 4 times a day until about 10pm). I thought this was just a phase, and getting into Autumn/winter we had our back door open less so I didn't really notice it.

However. With the roasting temperatures we've needed to have our living room door open, leaving our living room absolutely reeking whenever NDN sparks up (which is often!).

DH had a word with him the other night, asking if he'd mind doing it at the end of his garden instead (much further away from our home and wouldn't make our living room stink). He agreed but then got straight back to it the next day. When I (politely!) asked him if he'd mind moving away from our back door he pretended not to know what I was talking about. Since Saturday afternoon we've had probably 6 instances of our living room suddenly being flooded with very strong skunk smell.

If it was just me and DH I wouldn't care so much. But our DS (not quite 6 months old) has started having breathing difficulties lately and struggles in the heat, so letting the smell waft in/keeping the door shut are both less than ideal options.

The previous owner of the house said he had similar problems with the neighbour, so I feel pessimistic about our chances of getting him to stop. So - AIBU to be fuming with this neighbour? I know I can't stop him doing what he wants on his own property, but it's a real worry with DS and I feel like we're staring down the barrel of a long, hot, stinky summer...

Also welcomed - any thoughts on practical things we can do to solve this! I'm frantically googling outdoor extractor fans - if we could buy something that dissipates the stench upwards then I'd be well up for that but think I might need to invent it myself...

Can you put an air purifier at least in the baby's room? You can buy ones that are meant for smokers homes. You'd have to close the room off to purify the air but she'd get clean(er) air at last at night.

Sorry, it sounds like a genuinely shit situation.

AtHomeDadGlos · 18/06/2017 21:50

Well, seeing as it's illegal, call the Police?

sexcauldron · 18/06/2017 21:52

Selfish bastard, and since you've already asked nicely I'd now be telling him if he doesn't comply you'll be calling the police.

EllaElla · 18/06/2017 21:53

Call the police. You should not be put in a position to have to find a solution to ensure your family's comfort here!!

Putthatonyourneedles · 18/06/2017 21:53

Same situation with our ndn and I've spoken to the police who claim not to be able to do anything about it despite it being an illegal substance.

19lottie82 · 18/06/2017 22:11

Realistically the police can't do anything about people smoking it in their own homes.

19lottie82 · 18/06/2017 22:12

Well, they can, but they'd need a warrant to enter, and they're not going to go through the time and expense to get one for a bit of personal use.

AtHomeDadGlos · 18/06/2017 22:14

So you tell them you've seen people coming and going. Probably true. They'll pin them as a dealer.

Skunk is the fucking smelliest, intrusive, antisocial thing a neighbour can do and it is so rude of your neighbour. You have tried the nicey nicey approach and it hasn't worked. I would try the angry approach now, as in if you don't start smoking that shit outside the front door instead of the back, we are gonna be having words.
