To think this product is dangerous?

Just had an advert pop up on facebook for this padded strap thing that's meant to keep a child's head upright if they nod off in the car. AIBU to think it could be a suffocation hazard if it slipped down a bit, it could easily cover the nose and mouth and a parent might not notice right away, especially if the child is rear facing.

To think this product is dangerous?

No I wouldn't have thought so. Looks like its stretched taut across the car seat. Even if it did slip down, its not like the child's face is going to be wedged onto it.

iveburntthetoast · 18/06/2017 10:50

I never left the carrying handle down. I'd always click it to the back. Surely in the event of a crash, the baby's head could be thrown back and then forwards and crash into rte bar.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 18/06/2017 10:50

Actually I'd be more concerned with it in a crash ...and if the child was forward facing ..it could catch their neck.

wonderingsoul · 18/06/2017 10:53

I dont think so. Even if it did slip down is so rout against the sides that it wouldnt touch the mouth ir nose

Redsippycup · 18/06/2017 10:55

Toast - the instructions on my baby seat say the handle must always be clicked up as it helps to protect child if you roll the car and the roof is crushed, and that it offers some protection from flying glass and debris.

Birdsgottaf1y · 18/06/2017 10:55

I think in the event of an accident the child could be strangled by it.

It's going to move if the car is hit/flipped over and could put enough pressure on the windpipe to cause death.

They need to get these safety tested.

Having said that I read an article about an accident and the toddler was injured by the truck they were playing with when their car was hit.

I suppose it's about weighing up what is an unnecessary risk.

SaucyJack · 18/06/2017 10:55

It's a bit pointless anyway.

If you have a toddler that likes to sleep in the car, then surely you'd just get a seat that tilts backwards on the base anyway?

GeillisTheWitch · 18/06/2017 10:58

Even though it's taught surely if the child's head is flopping forwards it could still end up covering their nose though, if the child themselves fiddled with it and pushed it down or something? Maybe IABU and over cautious but it's not something I would be happy to use.

Not safety tested, would not be using this!

ophiotaurus · 18/06/2017 11:00

You need to keep the carrying handle up as PP said.
This device is not for that type of seat though it for an upright seat. I agree it does no look safe x

ophiotaurus · 18/06/2017 11:00

Excuse the kiss Blush

ThouShallNotPass · 18/06/2017 11:04

Oh hell no. Can you imagine in a crash? Baby's body goes slightly forward as much as the straps allow and the head is stopped by this? I'd think it would be far more dangerous. There's also the slipping down issue. Babies are built differently to adults. What we would find uncomfortable (drooping sleeping head) is perfectly fine for a child.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2017 11:14

I'm not convinced it's safe either.

Goodythreeshoes · 18/06/2017 11:15

Is it at eye level? Not much of a view!

JigglyTuff · 18/06/2017 11:16

Why would you ever put something round the front of your child's in the car which hadn't been safety tested?

That looks really unsafe :(

SleightOfHand · 18/06/2017 11:17

I think most kids would pull it off, it looks like it's blocking the view.

MuncheysMummy · 18/06/2017 11:35

It's not even on the carrying handle! The Theo of car seat in the pic is a second stage one it's just stretched from the sides of the seat

MuncheysMummy · 18/06/2017 11:36

Type not Theo!

Goingtobeawesome · 18/06/2017 11:42

iveburnthetoast possibly dependent on your make of seat but the bar was meant to be left in the middle of the seat, not pushed back against the rear of the seat, as it was protection in a rolling situation after a crash.

As for the product, a total non product as not necessary. No doubt they'll sell loads though.

Dexterslab · 18/06/2017 12:15

These haven't been safety tested as far as in aware. Nothing should ever be added to a child's car seat as it can impair the safety of the seat. I saw these a few weeks ago on Facebook and asked if it had been safety tested and didn't get a reply. Hugely dangerous!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/06/2017 12:18

I used to use a bandage when ds was small, these weren't around back then!

NicolasFlamel · 18/06/2017 12:54

Nope. No added untested crap on the car seat.

iveburntthetoast · 18/06/2017 13:39

It's many years ago since we used a car seat. Ours never had instructions about the handle, manybe that's something that's changed, or just the type we had. I suppose the baby shouldn't be able to fly that far forward if the harness is doing its job.

Goingtobeawesome · 18/06/2017 14:07

It's not about the baby flying forward. It's about protecting them if the car seat rolls.
