Hi all.

Could you please share your secrets of how you parallel park??

I just cannot get the hang of it and I'm tempted to find a driving instructor just to have a few lessons on parallel park!!

Please help hahah. Thanks xxx

I literally have no idea, I stop in front, go backward and end up in the space, but I do have 20 years of practice.

I don't think booking a driving instructor is a bad idea though.

StarryCorpulentCunt · 18/06/2017 12:12

Pick a big space on the left with a car facing the same way as you. Pull up next to it. Reverse in a straight line until your front wheels are lined up with it's back wheels. Stop. Check mirrors. Start inching back slowly and turn the wheel full lock to the left. When your back wheels are close to the kerb and your front has cleared it's back go full lock to the right until your car is straight and then quickly spun the when straight. Voila!

That is how my instructor taught me to do it.

kesstrel · 18/06/2017 12:13

I struggled with this, until I finally realised the trick is to forget tips and tricks and just:

concentrate on the visual goal of getting the rear end of my car to match up with the end of the other (parked) car I can see in the mirror, and micro-steer to achieve that.

When you stop thinking about tricks and tips, it becomes surprisingly easy - although you do have to be in the right position when you start. Someone mentioned maneuvering toy cars earlier - this is a good way to visualise how it works.

Oldgranny · 18/06/2017 12:14

You have no
idea how bad I am!!'

JaceLancs · 18/06/2017 12:19

Practice lots
DS changed jobs recently and had to start driving again after 6 years without a car - I showed him again re parking and he practiced for an hour every evening for a week

Ginger782 · 18/06/2017 12:21

Genuine question: when you go for your driving tests in the UK do you not have to demonstrate a parallel (or reverse park, as we call it in Aus)??

I remember doing 3 during my driving test.
One on a "main street" between 2 cars, one on a residential street behind a truck and one on a residential hill doing the parallel park UPHILL in reverse between two cars, so I had to do a hillstart in my manual car at the same time. That kind of pressure makes Aussie kids learn how to bloody well parallel park. Wink

JaceLancs · 18/06/2017 12:22

I have a very long car and am the queen of parking
A few months ago I was trying to squeeze into a very small space outside our village chemist - which I managed inch by inch - a lovely older gentleman stopped to watch and gave me a non sarcastic round of applause and told me how much he admired me
It also helps I've had my car a long time and know how big it is to the nearest millimetre

Ginger782 · 18/06/2017 12:23

And OP, go to a quiet street somewhere with huge spaces between parked cars and practice. Remove the pressure of possibly backing into another car and you'll soon perfect your angles.

zaalitje · 18/06/2017 12:26

In the UK the test and for one of:
Three point turn
Reversing into a bay
Reversing around a corner
Parallel parking

Sometimes you'll know you can't do one or two of them where you are.
I ended up doing 3 point turn on my test.

In regards to parallel parking, I had the briefest of time spent on it in lessons, literally 15 minutes, on a very quiet street with just one car to park behind, not two to park between.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/06/2017 13:20

My Ford Focus estate parallel parks for me, its brilliant and I never cease to be amazed at how small a space it can park in perfectly first time every time.

user1487941567 · 18/06/2017 13:28

I do it as per the diagram, which is how my instructor taught me.

I have am a bloody awesome parking master btw. On several occasions I have had men say to me in the street, "want me to park it for you darling?" Er no but you are perfectly welcome to stand and observe the brilliance of me. Grin

Scoobydoobydont · 18/06/2017 13:36

Ford park assist demo below. Works really, really well.

Same car we purchased for my wife and she loves it - unfortunately that is not her in the video ;-)

PickleSarnie · 18/06/2017 14:39

Buy a car that parks for you. I can parallel park my really long car with no hands!

PickleSarnie · 18/06/2017 14:42

Although once the auto parking didn't kick in. So I had to do it myself. Did it in one go. Got out, realised why it probably didn't kick in - the space was unbelievably tight. Was partly ridiculously chuffed about getting into such a small space. But mainly crapping self about not being able to get out (the was only space for three cars in the marked bay and the one behind could reverse and the one in front could drive forward so thankfully didn't block them in too)

kmc1111 · 18/06/2017 16:31

Practice, practice, practice!

I started out practicing in empty parking lots and streets at night. Just to try and get the movement down before risking going near any other cars. Then I moved on to trying it on quiet streets with a car in front but an empty space behind. My main concern was always bumping up against the car in front, so with no car behind I could fully focus on not doing that. Eventually moved on to normal parallel parking but only large spaces. I tried to always parallel park when out and about to get in the habit. After a few months I was fine in any size space, even with a crowd behind me and gawkers on the side walk.

Alternatively, there are cars with park assist and fully self driving cars aren't that far away, so if it causes you real anxiety and you can be afford a new car, it's not really a big concern.

ImNotReallyReal · 18/06/2017 16:37

Parallel park was introduced to the test I'm 1991 I think, the year I passed. We had to do a quick learn as the rules changed between my first (failed) test and my second one three weeks later.

There was no theory test then either. Just a couple of questions at the end of the test.

ImNotReallyReal · 18/06/2017 16:38

upsidedownfrown · 18/06/2017 17:36

I just passed my test (finally!) last week. Did parallel park on my test and aced it. The way I learned, in a hatchback is this ;

Line up with the car in front of the space and go forward/back until your rear wheels are just past their rear wheels. Turn steering 1 full circle to the left and reverse until you are facing at a 45 degree angle. Turn wheel full circle to the right and reverse until your wheel is nearly at the kerb. Turn one full circle to right until you are tucked in behind car and turn full circle to left to straighten wheels.

That sounds really long but when you're doing it, its actually really simple and that set of instructions never ever failed to get me into a space on a variety of different widths of road, length of gap etc.

Manijo · 18/06/2017 18:00

I'm the best parallel parker in the family...and my DH agrees.
It is practice as PP have mentioned. Go and find some quiet street where there not many people walking about...so that you don't get stressed....roads with terraced type houses are best. Don't practice near shops, on Hight street etc where there is lots of traffic.
You will get better! X

DistortedPerceptions · 18/06/2017 18:10

Pull up next to the car in front of the space, start reversing and turn steering wheel one full turn into the space then as your front comes past their bumper full turn the other way.

^this is how I do it, almost always works unless the space really is too small. I have to pp at work everyday so yes it really is practice.

Nikephorus · 18/06/2017 18:13

Backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards, repeat multiple times, swear and decide I didn't need to park after all, drive home. Easy-peasy.

Gibble1 · 19/06/2017 01:28

I'm amazing at parking! My driving instructor (20+ years ago) told me to turn the wheel until the kerb was 2/3 across the rear screen and then straighten up.
Many times I have parked in a tiny space with a car full of men who are sure I can't get in the space. I always do it. Last time I had lots of DHs friends in and they said I couldn't possibly get my (rather large) car in that space so I whipped in (in heels) and DH said "I've got to say, she's pretty good at parking- she'll get in any space!".
I've had a few rounds of applause for getting into or out of really tight spaces in my time. DHs parking is quite poor but he has not had the same experience of awful parking spaces that I had early on in his driving.
I have parking sensors in my current car and they're awful! So off putting. The kids call them Geoff and whenever I go to park in a weeny space, they'll be there laughing "Geoff's having a panic attack Mum- bush 100 miles away!". I've had more bumps (2) since Geoffs been on the scene than I ever had without him!

Oliversmumsarmy · 19/06/2017 01:35

Spot a car parking space and indicate you want to go in the space. Go past the space until the little arrow appears next to the P. Then Pu it in reverse.
A question appears on the screen. Do you want assisted parking.
Press ok then let the car do the rest.

I have been driving 30 years and cannot park.
I am the person who goes to the top of a multi storey to park.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 19/06/2017 02:09

I'm in Canada. My Ford Explorer can parallel park itself.

absolutelynot · 19/06/2017 02:15

pull up so their wing mirror is in the centre of your window. reverse with one full turn of your wheel to the right, when the rear badge of the car next to you is in the centre of your passenger window, one full turn to the left. when your wheel is almost touching the kerb (use mirror), full turn right again to strighten up
