To become a Computing Teacher?

Posted here for traffic!

I'm from England, but I now live in Scotland. I have a Computer Science degree and I'm considering getting into teaching.

Please can someone tell me if IABU and this is mad? Does anyone else do this? Is the state of the teaching profession really awful in Scotland as well as in England?

I am in the process of contacting a few schools to try and get some first-hand experience, but I would be grateful for as many perspectives as possible! Smile

Try asking on the staffroom board in education, lots of teachers there. I'm one but I'm leaving in the summer so don't ask me Wink

Oh Squidgey, can I ask why you're leaving?

Crap hours and money vs a return to industry. Its not quite that straightforward (family issues and my health) and I'm not leaving because I hate it, promise!

I teach in Scotland and love it. Yes, there are issues but we work a (nominal) 35 hour week and seem to be more protected from nonsense than in England. The SNP are working hard to fuck it up but the job is a good one, depending on where you teach. Remember your first year after training is a (paid, full pay) placement so it takes 2 years to train.

I'm training currently (I qualify this week in fact!) I have been a salaried trainee this year and is going to fit in well with my family. I do know that Computer Science teachers are like gold dust... you would be very much in demand and would have a good chance of getting paid to train on a SCITT course. Good luck!
