To be angry at the noise?

So it's a lovely hot sunny day and we want to enjoy the garden... except across the road (so we are in the back and can still hear it) is the idiot using his noisy car hose/kercher machine or whatever it is to wash his 4 cars. Then a couple of doors up someone is building some decking so got the saw (electric of some sort) and various other noisy tools! When they both go quiet it's blissful... can here some kids playing and the birds...buzzing bees...a faint radio/music of some sorts...

I think I'm more annoyed with the chap 2 doors up who is essentially doing building work at the weekend. Bang bang crash crash....saw saw! AIBU?!

I was lying peacefully on my lounger and just had a pigeon land on my head so I'd take a power tool any day. Gave me quite the shock, nasty flappy fucker.

Nelly5678 · 17/06/2017 17:28

When else are they meant to do it if they work all week? Middle of the night?

Frillyhorseyknickers · 17/06/2017 17:28

I fucking hate noise and I hate neighbours. We live out of the village, our nearest neighbour is over a mile away. It's great - we can make whatever racket we like.

Chocolateandwineplease27 · 17/06/2017 17:29

I'm with you OP... I know I'm being unreasonable but our neighbours have been jet washing their patio and decking for literally the last 4 hours. It's doing my head in. I am 38 weeks pregnant though and pretty fed up anyway so probably not my most tolerant!

TroysMammy · 17/06/2017 17:31

Are you my neighbour? Just to give you a heads up, I'm going to mow my lawn in half an hour when it's a bit cooler. Jobs don't stop because it's sunny.

witsender · 17/06/2017 17:33

This is one of those situations where you know you are not being reasonable to be annoyed, but equally it is fucking annoying.

This thread is Every. Single. Summer. On. Mumsnet Grin Grin

Then it's...

Kids playing out
Trampolines
BBQs
Wood burners
Cigarette/joint smoking neighbours
Music
Lawnmowers

That's just off the top of my head Grin

TheFairyCaravan · 17/06/2017 17:40

The woman behind me has her music banging out. It's pissing me right off.

I love sitting out in the week. All I can hear is the birds.

BewareOfDragons · 17/06/2017 17:41

When else are people who work during the week supposed to do these things? Homes, gardens, cars require maintenance. There are only so many hours in the day.

While I sympathize with the person who has said it's unfair that people who want quiet can't have it, I disagree that it's unfair. It can suck, yes, but it's just not a realistic expectation during daytime hours in densely packed neighborhoods. People have lives to lead, and that often comes with noise. If you want silence, get ear defenders, sit inside, take a book and a chair and go sit in a nature reserve, or move someplace quieter.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 17/06/2017 17:56

I quite like the sound of someone else's DIY. Especially if I am lazing around drinking margaritas and doing sweet FA.

We used to have a man next door to us who spent every weekend doing car maintenance and listening to mariachi music at top volume, the sort with the horns as well.

I can quite see how other people would find it very annoying though. I don't know what you can do about it as he probably can't do those sorts of chores during the week due to work.

January87 · 17/06/2017 17:57

We had a skip arrive yesterday afternoon for DH to do the back garden today. He cut hedges with a noisey hedge trimmer, mowed lawns, and broke up wood. It had to be done today because it's the only time we have to do it. He sweated buckets but it's done. I bet the neighbours doing the work aren't enjoying it much because they'd prefer to be relaxing like you but stuff has to get done.

Slimthistime · 17/06/2017 17:58

I live in a block of flats with no garden
But I feel for op
Jet washers, noisy garden tools
Seems bonkers and OTT. Why does the driveway need to sparkle?

YANBU...for years there was constantly a power tool on the go near me. But it seems most of the DIY is complete for now. Yay! I can actually hear dogs barking and birds singing and DD face timing her friend. It's bliss.

jenniferjane21 · 17/06/2017 18:04

Yanbu!

lucydogz · 17/06/2017 18:06

Yanbu. Surprised at the number of snarky responses.

Hickoryandsage · 17/06/2017 18:07

Nothing you can do, but yes incredibly annoying, particularly if it goes on all day.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 17/06/2017 18:11

Go out to the countryside for the day? Take a picnic and a book. Perfect.

pigletpie29 · 17/06/2017 18:15

Live in London, don't have a garden. I'm sitting on my bed with the windows open sweating my tits off. Playing the world's tiniest violin.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 17/06/2017 18:17

London has lots of parks though?

alabasterangel · 17/06/2017 18:28

I don't get the snarky responses either. And as I said if I could live in a field a mile from anyone, believe me I would. We are not moaning about kids playing noise - which is happy and generally fairly uncontrollable (without the aid of gags) it's the adult, inconsiderate, selfish noise.

As I said, me reading a book causes sod all impact to anyone. But endless bloody radios and music thumping does. You want music in your garden? Stick your fucking headphones in. I feel like getting a fucking megaphone and reading my book out loud round the garden at a disturbingly loud level for hours on end. My reading isn't disturbing you, so bugger off with your incessant yapping dog/drill/radio/crap Ibiza music...

Justdontgetitatall · 17/06/2017 18:35

It's a one off!! They won't be doing it later and it's light until 10pm. I think you need to realise where you're living - in suburbia!!

Justdontgetitatall · 17/06/2017 18:44

My neighbour's are having their monthly 'gathering' in their backyard tonight and I'm dreading it! Radio on and the friend of theirs that has a horrible cackling laugh every 15 seconds..... They know I have a 2yr old whose bedroom window looks over their yard at an angle. The radio doesn't bother me as long as it isn't unnecessarily loud and doesn't wake her up. I don't begrudge any one having good time on a sat night. We don't get much summer. But it's that's f'ing laugh!!!!!!! I won't how they don't get pig sick of her?! They can't be that funny...Hmm

Pandsbear · 17/06/2017 19:11

Oh OP I am sympathetic, but we all have this! (Well unless you do live the middle of nowhere). I am sitting in (and mostly ignoring) some music, some kids and the sounds of Dr Who. At least the person floor sanding stopped about 5pm.
