AIBU to think DD shouldn't plan on doing 2 degrees?

DD has always wanted to be a social worker. It's been her life goal for years. She started looking into it and it often requires some kind of experience, etc. she says she doesn't think she's old enough to do it Confused she is doing Psychology, Sociology, Maths and Biology A-Levels.

She has changed to wanting to do biology and is planning to go off in September to do it. She then says that later on she can do social work when she has life experience, but is that really a good idea? To plan to do 2 degrees? I have said why doesn't she get a job now and get some experience and go off and do social work later. Surely I'm right?

I suggest doing the social work degree straight away, but also signing up as a special in the police. That would give her 3 years of life experience highly relevant to her chosen career by the time she graduates. Just a thought.

There used to be an age bar on social work training but the shortage of social workers led to it being removed.

milady frontline is the same amount of work as an MA but you are also working pretty much full time. My friend ended up dropping off it after six months because the workload was just too intense.

I did a degree in Biochemistry straight from school then I did a degree in psychology as a mature student then I did my SW diploma as a two year course rather than a full degree. It has proven to be a really good mix of qualifications for me.

OP I think your DD has the right idea. Some life experience can be very beneficial going in to SW. They interview for the positions and you need to be able to indicate by experience what you can bring to the course and to the job.

Sounds like she has her head screwed on! She's giving herself a back up plan and is aware enough to realise that life experience is essential for a good social worker.

Very sensible for her age

I now earn less than my age group that did the vocation route first. My career never recovered from the later start. I may have life experience but i d switch it for a better career position and more money!

I sometimes think also that there are lots of people says yes do that but having seen others try and go for accountancy with another degree then I think employers say that you can do this, but then pick out the ones with accountancy degrees!
My DDs BF struggled with this one this year, yet had stellar academic quals just not in the right area! I also had difficulty switching - very suspicious about the reason for switching.

Oh and routes to qualification can and do change.
I intended at one point to be a midwife, and was advised to do nursing first. By the time I had qualified they had stopped the post reg route...
