I love to work. Im a trained teacher but have been working as a TA. I have been really struggling due to poor pay but have given my job 100%

Went for an interview today. I did well but not sure i got it. Then i found out that i have not passed my probational period in my current role so they wont renew my contract.
Feel utterly deflated and worn out trying to survive and feeling that im not performing well at home or work.

I really like where i curently work slthough mabagement didnt train me properly. The colleagues on the same level as me think im good at my job.

I find work place politics awful and im just so overwhelmed. Will keep trying but fed up of being knocked back.

I guess im struggling to find my niche.

I still might get the job i went for today but am waiting to hear. Same place, different department.

Are you applying for teaching roles?

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/06/2017 18:34

Did work explain why they weren't passing your probation?

RebornSlippy · 14/06/2017 18:35

What reasons were given for not passing your probation period?

RebornSlippy · 14/06/2017 18:36

Or what HundredMiles said!

malificent7 · 14/06/2017 18:48

Yes... but i felt the reasons were unfair as they hadnt trained me properly.
I came 2 weeks after everyone else as a supply. I had to set up some complex admin task. The line manager sat me next to an existing collegue who showed me how to do it.

I completed the task thinking i had done it right. After Christmas i was offered a rolling contract. I realised the registers could be more efficient so i asked another collegue to show me how to ammend it as my boss wont show me.

I ammended it and then messed up. My boss had a 'meeting' where she fixed me with a cold hard intimidating stare and went through the procedure which they then fixed.

Oh and i had three days off due to sickness...
hell... i can do bwtter!

Apparently the admin assistant used to carry out the admin role but has delagated it to everyone else.

She also feels im better suited to teaching and knows ive been looking.

RebornSlippy · 14/06/2017 19:11

Not good, is it, OP? Although your heart was in the right place in attempting to ammend the registers, fact of the matter is that your boss hadn't sanctioned it. And then, to make it worse you, in your own words, messed it up.

Maybe they're right and maybe you are better suited to teaching. Which answers your original question really.

I hope you get the teaching position you applied for. If you get the job and find yourself at a similar crossroads a year down the line... Well then, I'd be thinking of a plan b, to be honest. There's no shame in taking time to find your niche and teaching certainly isn't for everyone. You'll get there.

malificent7 · 14/06/2017 19:37

It wasnt for my boss to sanction. The fact is that if she had trained me properly in the first place then the registers would not have been set up wrong.
Tbh word was out that she didnt know how to set them up either.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/06/2017 19:47

What do you mean by train you "properly"? Did they train you or did they not train you? When (and how often) did you raise your concerns about the lack of training impacting your performance? Did you document this?

I don't understand why you went ahead and amended the registers without getting from your boss first? It sounds like there are more issues here than any lack of training. Is it really politics at play or or this just not a role/environment that suits you? I think you need to think really hard about why this role hasn't worked out. Rather than passing the buck and saying "management didn't train me properly", ask yourself what you could have done differently to affect the outcome. It does sound very much like this role wasn't right for you.

malificent7 · 14/06/2017 19:51

Everyone in my department moaned about lack of training so not just me.
If you call training me sitting next to a collegue who is already up to her eyeballs for 20 mins to demonstrste the procedure then yes... i admit i was 'trained. '

OP posts:
RebornSlippy · 14/06/2017 19:57

But, OP. The fact of the matter is that when you did the original task with "training" you did so correctly. When you took it upon yourself to do it without input/training from your boss you messed it up.

I can't really say more than that as I don't really understand the ins and outs of the situation. But from what you've said, you, in your own words, messed up a task that you weren't trained for or even asked to do.

All by the by. You feel you're not cut out for this environment/position. Your employers agree. Onwards.

malificent7 · 14/06/2017 20:04

The original set up wasnt right. Anyway... not the right role for me. I was so bored and spent most of my time worrying how i was going to feed my dd on such a shit wage!

OP posts:
malificent7 · 14/06/2017 20:13

My collegues will be sad... they have said things like
" if you dont get hired there is no justice in this world" before i got my fixed term contract.

"At last someone decent and hard working has been hired... the students love you! "

At least my colleagues love me! Will miss them!

"

It clearly wasn't the right role for you. As your boss I would be concerned that you seem to have a bit of an attitude and some unrealistic expectations. But maybe that's just lack of work experience showing. One of the lessons from this is to remember that it's the boss who makes the decisions and the boss you need to keep happy rather than your coworkers (that's just a bonus). Saying thing like "if she had trained me properly in the first place" would be enough to place your job at risk where I work. You need to take responsibility for your actions rather than blaming others. You sound very immature. I'm hoping you're just young.

Hope your interview was successful and you get a more suitable roles that makes you happy.

malificent7 · 14/06/2017 20:40

But it is the role of the boss to train new stagg members. Nothing immature about that. Everyonen thought so. My collegues were pissed off that they were expected to train new staff when they knew it was the admin assistant's job description.

But i couldnt keep a role where i was loosing cash by working.

Staff members even
