To be fed up of weight loss myths

Starvation mode does not exist.

You do not need breakfast to kick start your day.

Losing fat but gaining muscle so your weight stays the same. Bullshit.

The quicker you lose it the quicker you put it back on. Again no. I could lose 1lb a week for a year or 52lbs in a 6 months. If I start eating more calories I need to sustain that weight then yes I'll gain weight! Regardless of how I lost it.

Eat six small meals a day. Hmm

Today there has been a stark amount of weight/body-related threads.

I think it's something to do with Summer. Twas always thus.

I've always followed calories in vs calories out rule and so far it's worked for me.

Calyrical · 14/06/2017 17:59

Also eat less move more.

With you op.

bruffin · 14/06/2017 17:59

Agree with you on points one and two but not three.
In last few weeks have weighed mysekf on bodytrax machine at gym.
I have stayed same weight. I have list inches and body trax says my percentage of muscle has gone up and fat gone down

Also dont agree on 4th point. Last year list nearly 2 stone between may and september low calorie diet and swimming 4 hours a week. Stared eating normally and didnt weigh in until april and i am same weight as i was in september.

nostringstoholdmedown · 14/06/2017 18:01

I don't understand your reason for not agreeing with point 4?

OP posts:
Sirzy · 14/06/2017 18:02

I agree in general but

Losing fat but gaining muscle so your weight stays the same. Bullshit.

In the last year my weight hasn't changed (had previously lost 7 stone) but I have upped my exercise massively and as a result I am much more toned and have dropped a fair few inches and generally in most places a dress size.

Nancy91 · 14/06/2017 18:02

YEP. Makes me cringe when this "advice" is given out. I get told I'm negative or incorrect when I state facts Confused

Nancy91 · 14/06/2017 18:03

Also "toning"

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 14/06/2017 18:04

Starvation mode: why are there very thin anorexic people if this is a real thing?

nostringstoholdmedown · 14/06/2017 18:04

Maybe I didn't explain that point well ...

It's when someone says I've started dieting and not lost weight. People say it's because you're losing fat and gaining muscle.

In the beginning you are not going to gain much muscle mass. Not enough to cancel out any weight loss.

The 'starvation mode' myth always makes me laugh!

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 14/06/2017 18:06

In fairness, muscle is more dense than fat. So its very possible that with regular strength training, you will lose inches, and either stay the same weight or not loose as much as you expect (and in certain circumstances, actually weigh more)

fishonabicycle · 14/06/2017 18:06

It's actually quite difficult to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. Hence why body builders and fitness models do a few months bulking up and the a few months cutting. And starvation mode isn't a proper thing, but as you eat less, you tend to slow everything down - get more tired, do less, and work out less hard.

IsThatYouPaul · 14/06/2017 18:11

Hasn't point 4 had some scientific substance now - metabolism slows etc? Vaguely remember a Biggest Loser follow up study.

I get my science from tv documentaries though, so p'raps not.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 14/06/2017 18:11

Point 3 isn't bullshit - fat has a greater volume than muscle for the same weight - so for people like my DH who suddenly decided to take his cycling training serious a couple of years ago, his weight hasn't dramatically changed but all his old clothes are far too big (he's gone from picking up medium or large in some shops to small or XS in some cases)- he now has rock solid thighs and a tiny wasit. it helps me forget about just how much his bike collection is worth

But yes, for most woman who are doing a bit of dieting and a couple of sessions at the gym, they won't be gaining muscle at the rate that will make a dramatic change to their bodyshape while maintaining the same weight on the scales.

nostringstoholdmedown · 14/06/2017 18:12

Also being on all fours and lifting your leg in the air will not make you Kim kardashian. Neither will the step machine.

ihatethecold · 14/06/2017 18:13

I hate it when posters say you aren't losing weight because you need to eat more.

Such a misconception and there's loads of people repeating it on the other thread that's running.

Just read the blood sugar diet to see that this theory is bollocks.

bruffin · 14/06/2017 18:14

I ate more calories and excercised less but didnt gain any weight between september and april this year. As said then started on egym weights and aqua and pilates as well as more swimming, but no diet. Staying same weight but losing inches

Launderetta · 14/06/2017 18:15

Interesting.
My bmi is 31, I am chronically ill & find movement difficult. Food is my comfort.
I obviously don't like this situation but find it hard to think outside of the present moment, in the longer term.
I don't want to hijack this thread but, given the experiences of PPs, does anyone have any advice, please?
(Fyi I have a household that varies from 8 to just 2 people depending on their social lives &tc so am regularly preparing food for them).
Thanks.

bruffin · 14/06/2017 18:19

By the eay egym is brilliant. 9 machines set personally for you by smart card. 1 minute on then 1 minute to move on. 2 circuits take 40 minutes. Every 6 sessions go between positive and negative reps and redo strength test so weights are reset.

araiwa · 14/06/2017 18:24

Most people use this insane psychobabble as an excuse. They tell everyone that for a year theyre on a diet and go to the gym daily but are still fat. They forget to mention that they eat pies and cakes every night and going to the gym involves sitting in the jacuzzi for an hour.

lastqueenofscotland · 14/06/2017 18:26

They really really make me cringe. So much shit spouted on here

WonderLime · 14/06/2017 18:27

Agree with other people's comments about point 3, but I got what you meant. It's rather the comments from very ill advised people affirming that 'oh, you haven't lost any weight because muscle weights(Hmm) more than fat'. After three days in.

And there seems to be a trend that overweight people are the ones most blighted by 'starvation mode'.

I ended up in an argument a couple of months ago because a person I'd been talking to insisted that their 3 stone weight gain since they met their partner was all to do with the contraceptive pill. Confused

WonderLime · 14/06/2017 18:28

Ugh, *weighs, by weights

BrexitSucks · 14/06/2017 19:06

Villifying all carbs Confused.
People treat food like it's magic potion, sometimes.

bruffin · 14/06/2017 19:48

Agree about carbs brexit
