Flown several times and fear gets worse. Think it is loss of control and costraphobia (sp?) rather than fear of crashing although that too!

Last flight we took Jersey to UK so only an hour I had a massive panic attack on the flight back.

Flying to Spain in a few month so got time to try and get help this time.

It might be worth looking into some CBT or counselling. A friend was scared of dogs and had six sessions of counselling which really helped him.

Can you doctor prescribe anything? I don't know if rescue remedy would help but I used to take that before exams.

Hi there..very similar...have avoided flights for years..plus my family live overseas so I have been missing seeing them. I eventually went to the dr who gave Valium for flight..so that I could get onto the plane. But that did not touch the fear building up to the flight. I was sent to local anxiety service for CBT which helped a bit...but the boggy help was a mindfullness course and then app Headspace which has a meditation especially for fear of flying.

I have flown several times recently and the change has been amazing. I would say that that the difference is recognising how much I wanted the freedom of being able to fly places and a determination to overcome it. I realised that I was fighting myself and that if I worked with my feelings and changed my focus it helped.

It is a very real problem and can be so limiting..different things work for different people. I hope you find what works for you. Good Luck

Gin?

A friend of mine takes (prescribed) diazepram.

Some airlines offer fear of flying courses, I think virgin was one of them. Might be worth a try.

DH is a long haul pilot. It's very safe, I worry about him more driving to and from work. Remember the crew want to get home safely just as much as you, and everything in aviation ultimately comes down to safety.

I understand that Jamon I really do.
Does not stop my brain screaming terror though Grin
I have bought a relaxation/hypnosis cd
I have a book

Doesn't help the last flight I took two men thought it was very funny to talk about plane crashes and turbulence flights they had taken thinking they were funny because I was clearly scared.

Oh and I'm going on a dream liner and people keep telling me they've had engine problems and one had engine failure this week.

I have a friend who takes Valium (prescribed) before flights, as she also has a fear of flying. It really helps her calm down.

Beta blockers can also help with lots of the physical symptoms of panic attacks. Definitely worth a visit to your GP. You will not be the first patient with a fear of flying that they have encountered!

Long-term, CBT is the most likely to be effective at addressing your fears and helping you through them. It takes time and effort to work through though.

I recommend earphones and an audiobook while you are on the flight. That should block out the sound of prats who think it's funny to talk about disasters!
