To be a bit annoyed with my boss

Been in role for almost 2 years (including mat leave). Boss asked me to put cv in for job coming up, being advertised internally only. Line manager had no clue. Found out he also asked colleague, that's fine. Both put cv in, I put it in same day advert came out. Closing date brought forward because those he wanted to, had applied. Found out only two of us applied. Interview last week. Went well I think. Told today I didn't get the job. Reasons being, don't have the experience. Surely they knew that from my cv, so why the interview? Colleague does have the experience, although he's off sick today so not sure if he got the job, or if position still open.

AIBU to be annoyed at them for wasting my time and getting hopes up when there was no chance of me getting the job? Feel like I was asked just to make up numbers. Is this the way it is these days?

Thinking of changing career, very disheartened. Especially as I went for a professional review a few years ago and didn't pass, so confidence not great. Only to be told to apply for a job I feel like I had no chance if getting, and make me feel like crap and doubt my abilities. I'm about to turn 38, is it too late to change career?

Never too late for a career change - just make sure it's what you want. Don't rush into anything but work out what you do and don't want.

Good luck!

I'm not sure you are looking at this the right way.

1)Being asked to apply was a vote of confidence. If you were useless they absolutely wouldn't have asked you.

  1. Sometimes the person with less experience really knocks it out the park in the interview. It's it the case that experience always wins.

  2. Interview practice is always brilliant. The more interviews you do the better you get at them. The less nervous you are. Think about what you learned from the interview, ask for detailed feedback from one of the interviewers about what you could do better next time.

This is not a bad thing. It's just a step on the road.

Thanks, two good points of view there. I do feel better today after sleeping on it.

I agree with plunkett
It's a vote of confidence that they selected you for the interview. It shows that they see you as someone on the up. Not this time, but it does mark another step in the path. And they have clearly told you that the thing you lack is experience. Gain the experience and you have everything they are looking for

Thanks everyone, feeling much more positive about it today. I will try to use this as a kick up the bum to get a prof qual.
Thanks for your sensible comments 😊

Your boss wanted you to put your hat in the ring, so that you can be considered. The other person may have been in the lead all along but in interview either you could have exceeded their expectations or the other person could have come across as not really wanting it that much.

I agree with PP, it's a huge vote of confidence and good experience. Today was not your day but that's different from it never could have been.

Good for you Mama. Use it as a opportunity to sit down and think about where you'd really like to go with your career.

Winners are people who always have a Plan B.

Best of luck Flowers
