Wibu to wear long dress to royal ascot?

Bit last minute through dh's work and he has sent me details today with infinite details of what not to wear. Turns out it is the royal enclosure and dresses must be knee length or lower, shoulder straps must be an inch wide and hats are compulsory. Looking through my wardrobe I have found a lovely long dress that I bought last year and haven't had a chance to wear, but I am wondering whether anyone actually wears long dresses, or just slightly below the knee? I've never been and don't want to get it wrong. And I already need to go hat shopping so need to choose a dress first!

Thanks for any advice. All I can find online is the rules and a gazillion pictures of outrageous hats!

OP that IS lovely! It's not what I would call a maxi dress, it's more formal.

Thanks I am feeling much better about it now and should be able to get away with slightly more comfortable shoes than with a knee length dress.

Will be dragging my poor three year old to look at hats tomorrow!

Take the dress with you if you can. Have a great time at Ascot!

That is a lovely dress. If you go doe a coloured hat as someone suggested, then you would have to match that you one other element, shoes or bag. I would not - I think the black and white is lovely and should not be tampered with….. Less is more IMHO

The black dress is fine for royal enclosure. I'd take a cardi too as was freezing last year.
