The Queen's speech may be delayed because of the time it takes for the ink to dry on the goatskin vellum it's written on….you just couldn't make this stuff up.

I am not appreciating the UK being an international laughing stock:

Bossadad, as long as its a special 'humble' goat, that would be fine.

Tapandgo · 13/06/2017 15:40

No Queen, no Queens speech - sorted.
Except we are still left with this odious coalition

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 13/06/2017 15:46

Even if you abolished the Queen, the Government can't operate without a legislative programme. The vote on the Queen's Speech serves to confirm that the Government has a hope in hell of getting any legislation passed at all. The men in tights and woman in a shiny hat are set-dressing, but the declaration that "yes we are a functioning government with enough support to be workable as long as we don't push our luck" is important.

What's more important?

Queen's Speech?
Royal Ascot?
Order of the Garter ceremony

Foreigner here, wondering what any of these things are let alone their rank of importance Grin

@BossaDad GrinGrin!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/06/2017 18:42

Dutch
The order of importance should be:-
Queen's speech - formal announcement of Government's legislative plans for the year

Order of the Garter ceremony - 700 year old Order of Chivalry that is granted to a very limited number people who have served in public life

Royal Ascot - posh horse racing

However, I suspect HMQ's preferred order is
Royal Ascot
.
.
Other stuff

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/06/2017 18:48

I have a solution
HMQ accidently feeds the speech to Fusilier Llewellyn (The mascot of the Royal Welsh Regiment - a goat) then goes to Royal Ascot. Sorted

Chazs is the Queen on MN - or will Catherine tell her your brilliant suggestion?

The80sweregreat · 13/06/2017 20:37

Vellum, not worth the goat its written on.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/06/2017 20:40

mummytime

I believe the Queen is busy on the sweary thread so we may have to rely on Catherine.

The80sweregreat · 13/06/2017 21:00

Queen; barstsrd tories have messed up the only thing I love about the London season. Wankers.

caroldecker · 14/06/2017 01:38

Royal Ascot is far more important, as is the Order of the Garter ceremony. The govt does not actually need to do anything and Corbyn cannot form a govt.
If it was genuinely a hung parliament, the Queens speech would matter.

BoysofMelody · 14/06/2017 02:19

Does the Queen not write her own speech? Surely, she must have a say about what gets included in the speech though

Fucking hell, you are presumably an adult and you don't seem to have a first clue about how a parliamentary democracy or constitutional monarchy works. My dad semi seriously used to claim that should have to pass an exam before voting. I'm beginning to think he's right or at the very least , politics and constitutional government should be a compulsory subject at GCSE. Modern studies is taught in Scottish schools and I don't think it would do any harm to introduce something similar down south.

I have been ill and am out of the news loop. Can someone explain please 1) running through wheat fields and 2) why we are talking about goats?

ScooterOnTheMotorway · 14/06/2017 09:27

S'ok havefigured out the goat thing!

Still need to know about the wheat though.

ScooterOnTheMotorway · 14/06/2017 09:29
