The world is flat

I learnt today that there are 'flat earthers' who seriously believe the conspiracy theories of a flat planet rather than a spherical one.
AIBU to think you can't fix stupid? Or is that too harsh?

Dare I ask what the significance of Denver Airport is..?

WellThatSucks · 12/06/2017 21:48

They're interesting questions with easily researchable answers though, oobi. You can tell these people: go ahead, try it, google why the moon and sun look the same size - and guess what? They very rarely do. Thing is many of the people who ask these questions ask them as if the fact the questions even exist is proof per se of nefarious goings-on; they really don't want the answers because that might challenge their cherished beliefs in a worldview where the black ops arm of the Illuminati is out to get us all.

Twofurrycats · 12/06/2017 21:50

Conspiracy theorists love Denver airport it is a shiny bauble that distracts them. There are some murals which are a bit odd about the end of the world or something similar. It is apparently In the wrong place and could easily be made in to a fema camp. And the giant horse sculpture (links to 4 horseman of the apocalypse) killed the guy who made it. Hours of entertainment......

VestalVirgin · 12/06/2017 21:51

SnowBalls

Okay, lumping in toothbrushes and mobiles into the same category is definitely ignorant. If he continues to use electric toothbrushes and hairdryers, both of which are not nearly as necessary in modern life as mobile phones, I am tempted to assume conspiracies are just his hobby.

Twofurrycats, what are fema camps and smart meters? Never heard of those.

user1497253264 · 12/06/2017 21:56

Has anyone ridiculing these things actually researched it? Before they start spouting out about how stupid it is. It's like saying you don't like something even though you've never tried it.

Twofurrycats · 12/06/2017 21:57

Vestal
Electric meters that have wi fi - which are monitoring and poisoning us all.
Fema is the fedaral emergency management agency a real thing in USA. The conspiracy bit is that they have plans to open concentration camps for any dissidents.

BrightOranges · 12/06/2017 22:03

So NASA are trying to fool us in to thinking that the world isn't flat?

What about ancient Greek philosophy? They believed the concept of a spherical earth in 6th century BC.

Were they in on the hoax too?

OP posts:
Twofurrycats · 12/06/2017 22:04

Or are the ancient Greeks a hoax Smile

BrightOranges · 12/06/2017 22:06

I think they are actually Australian Grin

icedtea · 12/06/2017 22:06

Oobidobidooooo, basically, the flat earth is a disc protected by a dome like barrier called “the firmament”.

blackbag.gawker.com puts forward:
"But why would NASA do so much work to keep the truth hidden from the masses? Money, of course. It’s a hell of a lot cheaper to keep a global charade going than it is to actually do all of the impossible projects that NASA claims to be working on. That money, in turn, gets funneled back to the government

What’s more, the extra land that comes along with a flat earth means more natural resources. And if word got out about the secret store of oil hiding at the edge of the Earth, any remaining notion of scarcity would be shattered."

BrightOranges · 12/06/2017 22:28

Flat earthers mock space photos as photoshopped yet all their flat earth maps are drawings. And they believe only in their own drawings.

Hmm

Oh quizqueen. I just... what it's like? Thinking those thoughts?

alltouchedout · 12/06/2017 22:31

You did google and find out the answers right?

Badweekjustgotworse · 12/06/2017 22:34

You're talking about the DUP aren't you? Earth is flat, women don't have the right to choose, gays are an abomination and the world is only 10 thousand years old.

BrightOranges · 12/06/2017 22:36

I blame all those vaccinated people who have consumed too much fluoride. They'd believe anything!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 12/06/2017 22:49

I think they are actually Australian Grin

Ahhh!, but Australia doesn't exist though. Wink

BrightOranges · 12/06/2017 22:53

Exactly my point!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 12/06/2017 22:56

Could it be that the under side is actually an "anti earth"? Shock

stayathomegardener · 12/06/2017 23:10

I remember when I thought the world was flat. Just couldn't get my head around it.
I was 4. It was the 70's and we had no TV.

ollieplimsoles · 12/06/2017 23:20

There's nothing funny about young earth creationists. My neighbour is one, both me and dh have debated at length with him (on his request, because he loves fucking talking about it)

Yes he believes the earth is no more than 10000 years old and that there is a global conspiracy within the real scientific community to 'deny god'. But they also talk genesis in particular very literally, they believe in harmful concepts like original sin.

I keep arguing with them because they want to teach it to kids, that's unacceptable.

Zafodbeeblbrox10 · 12/06/2017 23:24

Flat earth does not particularly stand up to scrutiny.. It is a red herring like most other conspiracies. Although there is plenty of evidence that the so-called "powers-that-be" have been, and are up to no good, time and again.. Unfortunately for the general population of this planet there is very little collective memory.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/06/2017 23:40

All interesting questions that quiz queen raises to be fair

I'm sorry, they're really not very interesting to anyone with any real level of knowledge of science and maths. If you don't know the answers to those questions you don't need to 'research' them - you need to get some education.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 12/06/2017 23:43

Pah, your neighbour is being unnecessarily vague, Ollie. 10,000 my arse. The world was created on October 23rd (Julian calendar) 4004 BC. "Any fule [and Bishop Ussher] kno that."

TheCuriousOwl · 13/06/2017 00:23

Never knew about the Bielefeld conspiracy! Better tell my mate that she didn't have a baby there after all Grin
