I learnt today that there are 'flat earthers' who seriously believe the conspiracy theories of a flat planet rather than a spherical one.
AIBU to think you can't fix stupid? Or is that too harsh?

Well you can laugh away at the dumb flat earthers by my 5 yo DD would like to point out the flaw in the argument that things would fall of the edge of a flat earth.

As she said it "but that's wrong...things are pulled down by gravity....toward the centre of the planet. It doesn't matter if the planet is flat, you are still pulled to the centre. If you can walk over the edge you will just end up walking on the underneath. The only difference between a ball and a flat planet is how sharp the edges are."

Presumably this is wear Australia is...on the underside of the disk.

I had a proper argument with DH around Xmas time about this. I came home lightly pissed from a work do, he tried to get me interested in the flat earth shite he'd been reading that night, he got offended when I was scornful, I got offended that he might think I would be anything else and then really annoyed that he wasn't also completely scornful, he tried to psuedo science me, I shouted drunkenly. Lesson: flat earth theory threatens marital harmony, avoid avoid avoid.

How would he notice that the pilot dips the nose of the plane?

If the pilot stays in the exact same distance to the earth surface, he wouldn't notice at all!

He would only notice if the pilot just flew in a straight line, as that would take the plane higher and higher above surface level.

(But then he could attribute that to intent on the pilot's part.)

The following is a summing up of various points addressed during several actual conversations with a flat earther/prepper/conspiracy theorist I work with.

Well, it must be flat otherwise the chemtrails the govt is using to spray us all with poison* wouldn't work would they? The chems would just roll off the curves and fall into empty space below if it were round. Similarly rain, if Australia really existed how would it ever get wet when it rains - the water would have rolled off before it got to down under! You can do your own experiment if you don't believe me, hold a ball under a tap and watch the water roll off - the underneath of the ball never gets wet.

Only those who have been implanted with the mindcontrol microchips (this is what the vaccination program is a cover for) believe the Earth is round.

Let me add that we live in an area and work in an industry where many of the most advanced minds in the world are concentrated and from where just about every technological advance of the past 50 years has originated, so these people are not confined to Bumfuck Nowhere in the Bible Belt.

If you put 3 people at equal distances apart on the southern hemisphere and told them to look towards the south pole, they'd all be looking at the same star constellation. If the earth was flat that wouldnt be true.

My DFiance isn't particularly bright and a couple of weeks ago while watching the sunset on holiday I said something about the earth being round and he said something like "well actually I think it's flat, there's a lot of evidence to suggest this and people not who believe it" and I'm like...
All I've seen since then is flat earth talk!

Yes, things like doctored video evidence on You Tube have a lot to answer for in regards to fostering and encouraging the beliefs of these people. It's insidious. The person I mention tries to make us watch videos 'proving' the moon landings, 9/11 and Sandy Hook were hoaxes, he also believes Hillary Clinton is the leader of a paedophile ring operating out of a chain of pizza restaurants in Florida. Dinosaurs of course are a myth.

If you can see a curve then you can see a curve, but you can't see beyond the curve? A curve is a curve not a circle just like a flat line doesn't mean something is a square. Anyway I said I enjoy the theory of it, what I believe doesn't really matter to anyone but me.

If you want to know why people would cover up why the earth might be flat then do some research? Make up your own mind?

You can find out about gravity by researching quantum mechanics and general relativity, and also what the word science actually means.
Its isn't stupid to question so called facts, it's intelligent to question things and research it. If you just accept what you are told, that is not intelligent.

Most videos on YouTube are complete shit and contradict each other for the sake of people who are not scientists trying to prove points and show examples of so called evidence they gathered from another source. I am not a scientist, but I appreciate that there are other theories other than the mainstream.

I have done extensive reading, my friend is a flat earther.

The only way you can deny the earth as a globe is if you think that all space agencies, governments, scientists, astronauts and others are all lying.

Why would all these people lie?

What possible reason is there to create a conspiracy with millions of people?

If the earth really is flat, why go to all that trouble, instead of just not putting it out there in the first place?

We could have just ignored people hundreds (and thousands) of years ago, and carried on arm in arm with the medieval religious fanatics who tried to stop round eaarth theories because it threatened their ideas that they were the most important people, and ruined someof their god shit.
