We're a family of 6.
2 adults 3 teens one toddler. Included in the shopping is baby wipes /nappies and toiletries. Is this too much ?

I think that's about right if it includes nappies and toiletries, I spend about £100 a week on shopping including nappies and other household goods and there's only Two adults and two littlies, teenagers eat you out if house and home.

Crumbs1 · 11/06/2017 20:03

In truth, if the boys are home I can easily spend that on a weekend. I'd spend more than that on a supper party too.

If you can afford it, that's fine. It is quite easy to spend less if you want to make savings.

Bloke1976 · 11/06/2017 20:03

family of 5 here - we spend between £120 - £160 a week.

No teenagers, but that does include toiletries etc the full lot.

We eat out once a month as a treat.

Missingthepoint · 11/06/2017 20:04

Is there a lot of waste? Do you end up throwing a lot of stuff away? If yes then you may need to consider if some things have become a habit and not really core spend.

WhateverFlowsYourBoat · 11/06/2017 20:05

You could always watch 'Eat Well for Less' on BBC1 I think?

It shows families like yourself who spend too much and you could find inspiration where to count down and save if you feel like it is too much for you

Badders123 · 11/06/2017 20:07

We spend £120 a week
One veggie
One teen
Dh who is on an health kick
Also includes cleaning stuff and toiletries...it's not all food.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 11/06/2017 20:09

ITV's Good Food Save Money is (imo) better than eat well for less.

Also, I think Miguel Barclay's One Pound Meals book is a great recipe book filled with realistic recipes that are tasty and fairly simple and cheap. The only thing is every recipe is for one person, but it's easy enough to multiply up.

user1484615313 · 11/06/2017 20:09

We used to waste a lot of food. Very recently have been trying to use up all that's in the fridge. We cook from scratch too. Don't eat out and hardly ever drink.
We sound really boring.

OP posts:
PinkPeppers · 11/06/2017 20:11

You dont sound boring. You sound like a normal family to me.

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LTD8O5E/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21 this is the book - I saw it in the Works recently for £6

MrsPeelyWaly · 11/06/2017 20:13

No. I don't think you are.

dotdotdotmustdash · 11/06/2017 20:14

That includes all our meat and veg. Plus we had my mum for 3 days.

Only three days for a whole parent? My Mum would last us (family of 4) for at least a week and we would have plenty of bones for soup.

Sorry Wink

bevelino · 11/06/2017 20:15

We are a family of 6 with 4 teenage girls and spend around £100-£150 a week on food, plus toiletries galore on top.

grasspigeons · 11/06/2017 20:15

It's 3.79 a day per person for all their food and toiletries and presumably washing powder and cleaning products.
Doesn't seem too bad.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 11/06/2017 20:16

I'm always staggered when people claim to spend £40 a week for a family.

We eat lots of veggie dishes, cook from scratch, don't buy brands, don't by biscuits and treats particularly, but I spend on average about £110 and we are a family of 4. Both kids have school dinners. Husband and I take our lunch in. I very rarely throw food away.

What the hell are people eating?!

user1484615313 · 11/06/2017 20:17

Thanks bewty. Will check it out.

User get yourself a MN nickname and come and join us on the Frugaleers thread Lots of great budgetting support there ..We love to live well and save ££s also! Smile

MycatsaPirate · 11/06/2017 20:26

There are 3 of us here plus four cats and a ton of fish.

Our costs are £25 a month for the cats
£60 a month in the butchers
Around £60 a week in Asda/greengrocers - sometimes a lot less though.

We aim to eat veggie at least once a week and this costs include all packed lunches. Everything is pretty much cooked from scratch.

I do buy extra toilet rolls and washing powder and save it for DD1 who is at uni and she takes it back when she comes home to visit.

LittleGreenPear · 11/06/2017 20:44

We are a family of 4 and I spend £130 a week. No alcohol. Suits us

Schleeping · 11/06/2017 20:54

£3.80 a day per person. I'd say that's rather thrifty.

user1484615313 · 11/06/2017 20:55

Sorry about my username. Been trying to change it for weeks now. Just not happening for some reason. Confused I will join frugaleers for sure !

Depending on how unfillable the teenagers are, there's probably scope to reduce that a bit if you want to. Particularly if you have picky bird teenagers rather than bottomless pit ones. It depends how high you want food to be in the priority order. I'm not a big fan of arbitrary limits about what's too high and low. If budget dictates, fair enough, but otherwise it's a personal call.

Where do you shop? Can you get to Aldi or Lidl? What is your market and ethnic shop situation locally?

user1484615313 · 11/06/2017 21:03

I buy most of my shop from ALDI then go for some branded items to Sainsbury's. My teenagers wipe out any snacks in the cupboards by day three. So top ups are something I could cut down on I guess.

OP posts:
YolandiFuckinVisser · 11/06/2017 21:06

I spent £205 yesterday in Sainsbury's this included a pack of 3 pairs of leggings for DD, 2 bottles of P20 sunscreen because it was on offer and 3 bottles of wine. Withur the extra things would still have been about £150 for 2 adults, 15yo DS, 10yo DD, 2 medium sized dogs & 2 cats. We also get a veg box every week for £13.50 and the cupboard/fridge is bare every week by the time we shop again. I will also have to do a midweek shop for more fruit, bread cat food and ant other bits & pieces we run out of. I can't seem to make it any cheaper and DD has tea at the childminders 4 nights a week. Don't know where I'm going wrong really. (Sainsbury's was a one-off, usually do Tesco and Lidl but the cost seems to be the same wherever)

muckypup73 · 11/06/2017 21:08

I dont quite belive people that say they have a family of 6 that live on £60 worth of shopping a week! what are they eating everyday? chips and egg?
