Ok there are a free threads running slagging the tories for going with the DUP

However who would they go with?
They need to get to 326
They got 318 so needed 8

Look at the figures

Labour 262
SNP 35
LD 10
PC 4
Green 1
Sinn fein 7
Other 1
DUP 10

Lib dem wouldn't do it, and can you really see TM and SNP working together.

However as a note....
If JC wanted to form a government he would have to join forces with ALL the above and use one seat from Sinn Fein

I really do think that would be a coalition of chaos

The Dup still top the list of undesirables for me.

BoneyBackJefferson · 10/06/2017 14:32

If she upholds the promises that she will have to make for this to work, It will be interesting to see if she forces the MPs to vote for such extreme idiologies.

If she does it will cause chaos

and if she doesn't her coalition will fall apart and there will be chaos.

as for people not responding, they don't have to.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 10/06/2017 14:33

I don't think that the people criticising the coalition/ agreement with the DUP are saying that labour should form a coalition as outlined in your OP.

I accept that the Tories achieved more votes and more seats and am not aware of anybody who thinks differently.

I would be as critical of a coalition led by labour and involving Sinn Fein because of the problems it could cause for the Good Friday agreement

This is all a mess but a mess created by the government

Sunnymorningwithbacon · 10/06/2017 14:34

Sinn Fein will never take their seats in Westminster.

KittyOShea · 10/06/2017 14:37

Labour forming a coalition with Sinn Fein would be no different to the Tories forming a coalition with the DUP

  • it would make it impossible for the British government to have an impartial role in N Ireland
  • if Direct Rule was introduced in N Ireland then one side would have a distinct advantage contravening the Good Friday Agreement
  • we would have a party in government with strong links to terrorist groups and intimidation

That is no more acceptable for the Tories to do than anyone else.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 10/06/2017 14:49

Sinn Fein will never take their seats in Westminster.

I meant to say that. Would they count in theory as seats to make up the magic number? They wouldn't be much use in terms of getting legislation passed though. They would also - I guess - have no interest in supporting a Westminster based government.

KittyOShea · 10/06/2017 14:51

No they can't count in that way. Where they do count is in terms of creating a coalition- although it's said you need 326 seats for a majority it is really 323 to beat 'the other side' as SF won't take their seats and vote

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 10/06/2017 14:53

Sorry kitty I am probably being stupid. I meant as a coalition rather than a voting agreement which the DUP seem to have - although I am reading about a coalition as well.

KittyOShea · 10/06/2017 14:57

They could if they took up their seats but they never have in 100 years so I doubt they'll start now. Makes me wonder why people vote for them (and I live in N Ireland and am Catholic but can see beyond green and orange!)

Sunshinesuperman · 10/06/2017 15:09

I don't like DUP policies or principles but they are a democratically elected party and have a clear right to participate in the House of Commons . However I do not think any government of the day should go into a coalition with any sectarian party from NI due to the potential destabilising impact on NI.

I am unconvinced that this will be a stable arrangement whether a coalition or done on a vote by vote basis and think it is highly likely there will be another general election well before the five years is up.

witsender · 10/06/2017 16:03

What about the Good Friday agreement? That could all fall apart.
