4 out of 5 for leaving a holiday let clean and tidy

Just come home from a four day stay away. Rented a cottage through an airbnb type site. In addition to the inflated half term fee there was a cleaning and service fee of 80 pounds. We were out all day and cooked in the kitchen once and cleaned up after ourself as in our own home. Upon leaving I hoovered, wiped down the kitchen and bathroom, ( put bleach in tho loo) made the beds and gathered all the used towels into a laundry basket. I plumped cushions and folded the sofa throws. Bin emptied, recycling sorted and put out. Loaded the dish washer and switched it on but it was not finished by the time we had to vacate at 10am so we left it running. Also checked the communal space at the back of the house for missed doggy do every day ( but we watched the dogs like hawks anyway so not really possible).

We gave the cottage a five star review as despite a few niggles it was pretty good overall.

The owner has given us a 4 out of 5 star rating as guests for cleanliness. That's on my guest profile and I'm now a bit annoyed.

So bearing in mind I woke up early to ensure the place was left clean and tidy and a fee of 80 pounds is taken to include a clean before the next guests arrived, what was I supposed to do to get a 5 out of 5 star rating on my profile.

Would it be unreasonable to e mail the owners and ask, only I know I'll come across a bit disgruntled.

Wish I had now mentioned in my review how crap the lack of a back garden in a supposed dog friendly cottage is. Wink

The whole concept of rating guests annoys me.

It was brought in by Airbnb for people who were being hosted in homesharing situations and that is fair enough - you want to know that the person you are sharing your home with overnight is not an axe murderer, it shouldn't really apply to whole house/cottage rentals. The other online travel agencies have adopted the policy in their rush to become Airbnb clones, but it doesn't sit well with me.

When you purchase goods/services you are entitled to rate them but under normal circumstances the vendor does not get to rate the purchaser.

I have an apartment I rent on Airbnb and as long as people have put rubbish in bins and generally tidied up they get 5/5.

However the amount of people that give us lower score because they clearly didn't read the description properly is staggering.
I had one guy complain that he had to move a heavy safe to make the sofa bed. Utter rubbish move the bloody bed.
Another complained it was cold, put the heating on then! There are radiators next to the bed that he could have switched on.

We don't charge cleaning fee we just get on with it.
Some people are never happy, they just like to complain

4/5 is 80%. There was a time where that would have been considered really good. Sadly, so many people seem to think that, despite there being a range of 5 stars to choose from, only 1 or 5 are options. Honestly, if I were in your situation I wouldn't care about this enough to start a thread on MN, far less get into a debate with the other party about it.

You sound like a real martyr. Let it go.

I'm amazed at the number of people who say they strip the beds before they leave. I definitely see that as a job for the cleaners doing the changeover - just as I would expect housekeeping to change the beds in a hotel. If I didn't make the beds up on arrival then I don't strip them before I leave.

Last AirBnB we stayed in was a flat on 4th floor with no access out the back and we didn't know where to put the rubbish. We messaged the host who replied "don't worry about that the cleaner will sort it out". She seemed surprised we'd asked but gave us a good rating. That was is Portugal though - the Portuguese do seem to be quite laid back and are very hospitable - we've stayed in 2 different cities there in AirBnB appartments
