Living in the Cayman Islands

user1491812680 · 08/06/2017 10:37

Could anyone give me some idea of what it is like to live in the Cayman Islands. I have been approached about work there (I'm a Secretary and a new firm setting up has asked me to consider this). Its is completely untenable unless you are earning a massive amount of money and what is the daily life like there for ex-pats?
thanks

Your daughter won't become a resident, it doesn't work like that in Cayman. She will be a dependent on a work permit for as long as the work permit holder is working in Cayman, so it sounds like she would be on your work permit.
There isn't a home postal service, you have a po box at a post office, but the mail service is pretty reliable. You have to pay tax on anything sent to you though, unless it's a gift near a birthday or Christmas. I had to pay tax on some toys one of my older children sent their little brother and sister one Easter. I also had to pay tax on a free gift on a Beano magazine that my son had a subscription for!

OP mentioned the child being 'sponsored' by the ex. If that's correct, does that mean child would be a dependent on his work permit? You really need independent legal advice on this,OP.

Do you and DD like swimming? Snorkelling? Diving- or learning to dive?Fishing? If you love the sea,( not Irish sea, a sea thats warm and clear ,)you could love living on a Caribbean island. If that's not your bag, a lot less so.

Go and see. You might love it.

The child could be a dependent on either parent's work permit. It might depend on how much money the OP earns but I would expect her child would be on her work permit. You don't need to be sponsored to work there. You need a work permit which isn't always easy to get but it is if a firm/business is getting one for you. My sister lived there 2 years ago and I am still in contact with many Caymanians.
If you like sea, sand and sunshine it's a great place to spend a few years.

Used to work with a guy who'd lived there. He said it was great except Thursdays when the cruise ships came in and the place was overrun with tourists.
