I agree more with labours manifesto. But can't see how they can afford to carry it all out without a shed load of tax or debt.
Can they?

It's Election Day. Surely it's time for the fighting and arguing to stop. Let people make up their own minds in peace.

Jimmymum · 08/06/2017 09:17

I'm not a Tory, but I want out of Europe without the single market so I'm voting Tory. Labour just buys votes giving money away.

I have preferred the housing benefits cuts no families staying in £350k houses near me and not working and basically being anti social or generally lowering the tone. Now I love living where I do, I hated it for a while. I own my home and I went back to work a fortnight after giving birth and I'm a single parent from birth, some people simply have no work ethic, even when it comes to looking after their home or educating their child, they just think differently. I got so annoyed seeing these people staying in a similar house for free when I was sleep deprived and paying a mortgage and nursery costs alone. I know I will get abuse for saying this, I saved and worked really hard and then you end up seeing you need not of bothered, when others get their rent and council tax all paid. I'm glad these days are gone, I hope!

Paddybare · 08/06/2017 09:19

ssd, of course I'm concerned about those things, I just don't believe Labour increased spending is sustainable for any length of time. Labour will get in to power again at some point, probably not this time but maybe next time. However, for me to consider voting for them I have to see that their plans are not just built on borrowing. By all means campaign on the tax more mantra but they have to be honest with people that it's not just the 'rich' that will have to pay, it's every single one of us that will have to pay more if we are to live within our means.

I suppose that's sort of where the lib-dems are heading with their 1p increase in income tax. If they had any sort of chance (even to form another coalition) I would be voting for them.

A longer term view trumps short-termism for me. At some point, borrowing will need to be reduced, it just cannot go on forever.

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:23

So do you think it isn't worth paying more to have a decent NHS, decent schools, decent social care for the elderly, a properly funded police force and army? You would rather things kept going and these organisations suffered more cuts whilst the richer people in society got even richer?

You dont think the way that money is distributed in our society needs to change. for everyones sake?

I'm voting based on my childrens future too.

ExplodedCloud · 08/06/2017 09:25

Maybe not. But 50% of the Labour manifesto sounds better than any of the Conservative manifesto to me.

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:28

Jimmy, for every person living in a 350k home near you and lowering the tone (FFS), there are thousands living with disability cuts that have left them scared for their lives, thousands waiting for a referral to a food bank just to feed their kids, thousands in private rentals worried if they'll have to move again, thousands trying to get their child or themselves DLA/PIP payments and fighting an aggressive system.

you posts entirely sums up the tory philosophy.

BeyondThePage · 08/06/2017 09:32

Labour traditionally borrow more than 3 times the Tory level of borrowing. It will be paid for from that, and the future.

Paddybare · 08/06/2017 09:35

ssd did you read my post? I said that I would be happy to pay more but the only party offering that at the moment is the Lib-dems. As I said, if they had a chance I would vote for them.

Labour is not offering the chance to pay a bit more- they are scraping at the sides of taxing 'the rich' a bit more. Yes, it will raise some more money but in the grand scheme of things not very much- it certainly wont be enough to create JC's utopian vision of Britain.

I know the Conservatives aren't offering the option to pay more either but they are offering the option to reduce borrowing, which long-term has to be the right thing. I don't want my children to be saddled with the fallout from Labour's 'spend now, worry about it later' policy.

ExplodedCloud · 08/06/2017 09:35

Beyond this Conservative government have borrowed more than every Labour government ever.

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:37

the government owes £1.7 trillion, up from about £1 trillion in 2009/10.

the government want you to believe that labour borrow more but it just isn't true

kateemo · 08/06/2017 09:39

It's sad how little hope the Conservative manifesto and way of thinking gives to people. It's all about managing debt, controlling expenditure.

How on Earth are other countries who do all of these things (and much more) written in the Labour manifesto able to do it? They must be cleverer?

Or not: www.theguardian.com/news/2017/jun/03/the-big-issue-labour-manifesto-what-economy-needs

Paddybare · 08/06/2017 09:40

exploded yes that's true. What is also true is that your statement would be be correct had any party been in power.

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:40

Paddy, borrowing has gone up since this gov came into power.

Jimmymum · 08/06/2017 09:40

ssd I agree I sound dreadful! I honestly couldn't stand it though. I do have sympathy and think it must be awful to be moved constantly with kids. Does throwing money at the situation change these people work ethic and make these parents value education? No because they are so reliant on the state.

Nikephorus · 08/06/2017 09:41

So I'm voting Labour so I must be thick?????
Judging from the posts on Mumsnet recently from Labour voters - yes.

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:43

Paddy, you are contradicting yourself. If labour borrowing is so bad, how come when the conservatives borrow more thats all right then, as its not really their fault, any party been in power would presumably have done the same?

ssd · 08/06/2017 09:44

Jimmy, who has been paying their rent and council tax the last 7 years then?

user1471545174 · 08/06/2017 09:46

Jimmymum you're entirely within your rights to be concerned both about how you subsidise some unworthy people and the overall tone of where you live. Please don't let these middle class people bully that out of you.

Nikephorus · 08/06/2017 09:46

But 50% of the Labour manifesto sounds better than any of the Conservative manifesto to me.
Sounds great but we can't afford it. Theresa May could have promised the world to get votes but she didn't because she knows that Britain can't afford to spend, spend, spend. It's like telling yourself that you really want that big house, new car, foreign holiday and new wardrobe - sounds great, but not so good when you've got a whacking mortgage that you can't afford and massive credit card debts. May is suggesting opting for the 3-bed property, holding off on the new car and maybe getting a last-minute deal for your holiday. And maybe just buy a few new items that you'll wear more.

waitforitfdear · 08/06/2017 09:47

Already voted Tory and a reluctant Tory but no of course he can't carry out all he's promising. Nobody can. Nobody will.

I certainly don't think labour voters are thick. I think most of them are idealistic and don't remember the 70s.

The ones that do remember the 70s just baffle me.

Abitofaproblem · 08/06/2017 09:48

Bit hard to give you sources for the fact companies are making plans to leave because individual companies won't announce until the process is nearing conclusion and obviously those of us working on the relocation are bound by client confidentiality so can't name the household names that are doing it right now.

As far as I know two European cities are the last stage contender of my husband's company's Brexit move. And my husband is rather low down so maybe a final decision has been made. A Corbyn government makes the decision to press that final button to leave so much easier.

I think UK are around 27th on GDP per capita. We may be a big economy but not that rich or productive?

Jimmymum · 08/06/2017 09:49

Ssd the government! They now live in a council scheme, the rent benefit has been cut. Out of my street and I'm relieved, just neighbour like myself. I'm obviously a Tory!
