To still not know who to vote for?

namefail · 08/06/2017 06:48

I still don't know who to vote for, I really don't like any of them. The polling stations have opened..

I think at this rate I'm probably not going to vote, but that seems so irresponsible.

but I think Jeremy Corbyn is a poor leader and unrealistic, making promises that are impossible to keep. I would be voting Labour if he wasn't at the helm.

If it helps, I voted for David Cameron last time. Yet 12months later Teresa May was in charge Hmm vote for policies, not for people

MyOtherProfile · 08/06/2017 07:39

Please don't fall for the myrh that May is strong and Corbyn is weak. May is the one who has refused to meet the public, refused to debate, made countless u turns before even getting back into power while Jeremy has stuck firm to his mesaage from day one and has really risen in my view over the last few weeks. Its only May who keeps repeating the strong and stable mantra. Doesn't make it true.

Mumumara · 08/06/2017 07:39

Not sure May fits my definition of a "strong leader" but even if she fits yours, you have to consider whether she is "leading" us in a direction you are comfortable with.

I'm sure there are some very unpleasant dictators in history who carried out unspeakable crimes against humanity who could be described as strong leaders.
And yes, she could always resign when the shit next hits the fan (see Cameron), and then you have to look at who it her "team" will take over.

Throw off the Tories! We want our country back!

I looked at four things as a genuinely undecided voter:

  • who my local candidates were and what my (Tory) MP's voting record was (theyworkforyou website). Turns out he's somewhere to the right of UKIP and the Labour candidate is a local successful businessman with years of local govt experience and a good track record;
  • Brexit. I negotiate for a living and would never be as aggressive as the current govt unless I had about a million cards up my sleeve. They don't and I think they've blown it already. If you Google 'May Juncker dinner' there are reports from all over the political spectrum saying similar.
  • NHS and police. I've a lot of friends who work in both. Twice in the last three years I've had to pay to go private or wait for over three months for treatment for illness that was preventing me being at work. I was fortunate I could pay but it made me very aware that if I was in a less well paid job is have been waiting for months, out of work and potentially struggling to pay rent/mortgage depending on my sick pay.
  • I live in an affluent area but there's a food bank collection point in my local Sainsbury's and they are appealing for toilet roll and soap, amongst other things. I find that horrifying. Food banks aren't a part of the welfare state, they are a sign the welfare state is failing.

So I chose my local Labour candidate. Realistically I don't think they will have an overall majority but I do hope May won't have so many seats as expected and there will be some compromises made to make things better for people.

Maybe raising this question on MN OP isn't a good idea. You're not going to get a balanced answer. Go into the manifestos online - study them and study the characters of the people you are voting for, because regardless of what people say, the leader is of course important; not just their policies, otherwise you could put any donkey in charge.

TheNaze73 · 08/06/2017 07:52

You'll not get a balanced view on here OP.

Look at what is important to you & your conscience.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 08/06/2017 07:56

Vote for the party that fits your own veiws best. None will fit 100%. The only vote which is a wasted vote is the one which isn't cast.

sportinguista · 08/06/2017 08:03

I feel the same, I was even thinking of not voting or spoiling the paper. However we do have the "Buss Pass Elvis" party here so it seems a good option at least. I've met him as opposed to any of the others and he's a bloody good cartoonist to boot!

Some really helpful comments, thank you.

I will spend today looking into manifestos and further researching.

Thanks everyone
