I'm hoping the outcome is a hung parliament which allows a progressive alliance to form.

Interesting article.

I've always voted since I was able too I'm in the young range 18-25 and most of the people I know in my age range who are voting will be voting Tory.

KatherinaMinola · 08/06/2017 10:53

I read that Stephen Bush article the other day - brilliantly informative.

I hope for a hung parliament too (and therefore no Brexit), but I think the New Statesman is right and that the young vote is too thinly spread around the country to make a difference. I also think first-time voters don't understand so much about tactical voting, so won't necessarily vote for the candidate who will make the difference. Hope I'm proved wrong though!

DisneylandDreams · 08/06/2017 13:41

Mind you Katherina, my 18 yr old DD and 15 yr old DS are both well aware that we live in a constituency where Labour stands no chance of winning, so are prepared (theoretically of course, for DS) to vote tactically just to remove the current Tory MP. The Lib Dem candidate only lost by a few hundred votes last time, so there is a little bit of hope that they might win this time and oust the hypocrite we currently have.

LurkingHusband · 08/06/2017 13:44

Yep, Yougov predicting a 7 point lead and an increased majority for the Conservative party.

Are they ?

yougov.co.uk/uk-general-election-2017/

Says 302 seats for Con.

Fake news.

CrossWordSalad · 08/06/2017 14:36

I don't understand this. Labour have said in their manifesto that they will honour the referendum results and Brexit. Do you think they are lying?

KatherinaMinola · 08/06/2017 14:39

No I don't Cross - I actually think JC is quite keen on Brexit.

But if there's a hung parliament, Labour would have to join forces with the SNP (assuming they are still a major force), the Lib Dems and the Green. Who would all try to mitigate against Brexit.

BastardBloodAndSand · 08/06/2017 14:46

Just seen an elderly lady being helped up.the steps after nearly being blown over by the wind on her way to vote.

If someone who must be knocking on for her 80s at least can venture out into the foul weather to vote I'm pretty sure young people can manage to.

LumelaMme · 08/06/2017 14:59

Fake news.

Maybe YouGov should make up its mind
I think this might be the link that GreenRut was thinking about.

MyBreadIsEggy · 08/06/2017 15:05

I'm 22 and went out at 7:30am in the pissing rain with DH and both kids on his way to work to get my vote in the box!
I'm very interested in politics and despair at the others my age who don't take any interest because it's our future that's being decided here!! I think I read somewhere that majority of voters in this country are over 40?

InfiniteSheldon · 08/06/2017 15:08

Almost all the young people I know are voting Tory so I hope they come out in droves

birdsdestiny · 08/06/2017 15:10

The polls are all over the place. The average of polls puts the Tories 5 or 7 points ahead, I can't remember which. So it's not fake news but just that there are different polls saying different things.

DollyMcDolly · 08/06/2017 15:12

I know a 19 year old and 21 year old who say they are voting Tory. Not everyone who is young will vote Labour

PaintingByNumbers · 08/06/2017 20:14

its fair enough really if young people vote tory, as they are the ones who will be most screwed over by it. i'd rather they had voted for it than been outvoted by the older generations and then screwed over.

SomeOtherFuckers · 08/06/2017 20:51

Everyone I know has voted ( I'm 22)

rhinorocks · 08/06/2017 20:54

I think a lot have postal votes. Both of mine opted for ongoing postal last year and so voted at the weekend

SomeOtherFuckers · 08/06/2017 20:55

A) they registered on the last day because they had to get their NI numbers and they're usually at mums house ( sounds stupid but it's safer there and 200miles away from my uni)
B) the numbers aren't reflective because young people move so often we have to re register every time whereas older people usually stay put x

Maxandrubyrubyandmax · 08/06/2017 21:07

Did someone up thread say brew dog giving free beer for voters?? Anyone know if free gin is being offered anywhere

specialsubject · 08/06/2017 21:09

We won't ever know the vote split by age. Or anything except location.

But let's hope for a good turnout.

GreenRut · 08/06/2017 22:19

Yes lumela, yes that's right, I was / thanks!

I think YG are separately predicting a hung parliament using another model of prediction (not polling).

Interesting given the exit poll!

Camomila · 08/06/2017 22:40

I'm a youngish person (29). On my Facebook a lot of people who I've never known take an interest in politics before said they've voted and they've all voted labour :)

My leave voting swing voter close friend (we talk about politics a fair bit) also voted labour.

Talk of 72% turnout in ages 18-25. Good work young uns. I hope this will teach older generations not to lazily stereotype you.

Mulledwine1 · 09/06/2017 08:27

Well done to the young for getting out this time and making a difference. Pity they didn't vote in the referendum though.

I went out to vote yesterday at about 10am and I was the youngest in the polling station by about 30 years. My sitting Tory MP had a very minor dent in his HUGE majority - down 0.4%. Very disappointing, although there was a large turnout and the Labour vote overtook the Libdem vote (in 2010 they polled 25%). I wonder though if quite a few of the youngsters were voting in their university towns. Anyway well done for what they did in Canterbury.

specialsubject · 09/06/2017 13:30

No one has any idea of turnout by age. Fake news!!!

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 09/06/2017 13:35
