I have booked two hotel rooms instead of just one. AIBU to think I should be refunded?

A few weeks ago, I booked online through Agoda. The transaction didn't seem to be completed so I clicked on again. Best price for the room was non refundable . I received confirmation emails and assumed they had sent duplicates for some reason.

I arrived at the hotel today to learn that I had unwittingly booked two rooms for a fortnight instead of just one. The hotel says that since the rooms are non refundable that they cannot recompense me. I understand their position but has anyone else experienced this? Any advice? If nothing else, id like MN readers to realise how simply this can happen.

Surely the confirmation had seperate booking numbers, or something that indentified that you booked twice.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 06/06/2017 18:10

But they missed a genuine booking due to your mistake.
Didn't the confirmation emails have different reference numbers?
Sorry I don't think they should refund you.

Chewie198686 · 06/06/2017 18:11

I'd say as you did it a few weeks ago, and if both bookings have different references and room numbers etc. Are clearly different when you read both emails then sorry, your fault, hotel could well have lost a booking due to you not paying attention. Not their fault and they could be at a loss.

Maybe they will refund you out of good will.

Or perhaps refund you if they are able to relet the room.

But yea, YABU.

StoorieHoose · 06/06/2017 18:11

Why did you think the transaction didn't complete? Also surely if it wa a few weeks ago you would have noticed you had been charged twice?

caffeinestream · 06/06/2017 18:13

Why didn't you do something about it when you got charged twice? Surely you haven't only just noticed?

I think if you'd e-mailed/rang after making the second booking or the following day, you'd be entitled to a refund, but as it stands, they've lost a genuine booking due to your error.

You're not owed a refund imo.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/06/2017 18:14

YABU. This is your mistake and they shouldn't be out of pocket for it.

Clearly you don't keep an eye on your finances, else you'd have noticed you'd been charged twice.

mrsgregorypeck · 06/06/2017 18:23

Ok, I obviously am being U. I didn't check the emails closely at all apart from noting that the dates were correct. I've booked dozens of hotels online for many years and never had a problem. Not the hotel's fault of course but mine.

caffeinestream · 06/06/2017 18:30

Did you not realise you'd been charged twice, though?

harderandharder2breathe · 06/06/2017 18:32

If you'd queried it as soon as you got the duplicate confirmations I'd say they should refund

As you didn't do anything no you wouldn't

Instasista · 06/06/2017 18:35

You don't usually get charged until you arrive at or leave the hotel though? Not upon booking.

I'd actually argue the toss about this one. Yes you should've checked but you're not using room- it may well be easy enough for them to resell

caffeinestream · 06/06/2017 18:38

Depends on the hotel in my experience, @instasista.

Some sites will charge you but offer a refund if you cancel within 48 hours, for example. Others won't charge you until 48 hours beforehand (giving you time to cancel without paying anything), and others charge you on booking and you have to pay regardless.

Rollergirl1 · 06/06/2017 18:44

I don't understand why you didn't investigate and clarify when you received 2 confirmation emails given that you weren't sure if the transaction had gone through correctly the first time.

mrsgregorypeck · 06/06/2017 18:46

I wasn't charged and still haven't been but will be. The emails gave the charge for one room which was, of course, correct. I couldn't understand why a duplicate had been sent of what I thought was the same booking but it certainly wasn't made clear that another, second, room had been booked since all details were identical.

where are you? ...I'd kill for a fortnight in a hotel room!

you could throw it out to the MNmassive and let MNters have a couple of days each!

if they are not going to refund I'd make DAMNED sure I used both rooms.

Heratnumber7 · 06/06/2017 18:48

Can you sublet the surplus room really quickly, even for half price? I'm free! Blush

Untangled07 · 06/06/2017 18:54

Sorry, but I think it's your fault. You had to click twice to confirm your booking but you weren't alerted by the fact you received two confirmation emails? If you'd contacted the hotel straight away then of course they should have refunded the duplicate booking. But you left it too late for the hotel to resell the room, so why should your carelessness lose the hotel money?

Instasista · 06/06/2017 19:05

It's for a fortnight?! Of course you shouldn't be charged the whole 2 weeks

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/06/2017 20:28

Of course you shouldn't be charged the whole 2 weeks

Why should the hotel have to be two weeks out of pocket because of a customers mistake?

Instasista · 06/06/2017 20:42

It's very unlikely they can't re-let the room for at least some of that time

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/06/2017 20:46

It's very unlikely they can't re-let the room for at least some of that time

At such short notice it's very likely they can't relet it again.

LouHotel · 06/06/2017 20:50

I work for a big chain and would have let you off or compromised and refunded you any nights we were able to resell the room. These things happen sometimes.

If your staying at an indpendant they wouldnt be able to afford to do the above.

Instasista · 06/06/2017 20:52

How could you possibly know that? 2 weeks is a very long stay. Unless it's an isolated sunny holiday resort I can't see why not. I used to work in hotels and we'd still be letting them
Into the evening with walk ins

Brittbugs80 · 06/06/2017 21:06

Sleep one week in each room?!

SandyDenny · 06/06/2017 21:15

OP hasn't given any details of where she is so I don't see how you can say the hotel can't sell the rooms.

I'm sure you'll be speaking to the manager to find a solution that suits you both as best it can.

caroldecker · 06/06/2017 21:29

The hotel is very unlikely to be 100% full every night for 2 weeks. The 'spare' room will be the last to let each night.
