About maternity leave

I'll keep this a brief as I can Confused
I am a teacher. I finished work in April to have DD. I need to return to work in September as a full time CT as we can't afford more time off (New school/surprise baby so only maternity allowance).
My friends, also teachers at different schools, have asked if I am going back on the last day of July term so I get paid for the summer.
Is this really cheeky? Has anyone else in a similar situation done this? Can they say no?
Thank you.

Every teacher I know has done this since the dawn of time. Totally standard.

I think the notice period you need to give for changing the dates of your maternity leave is the same as your normal notice period - eg for me it was four weeks, but yours might be a half term. So you might have just missed the boat. Your union will know.

MaidOfStars · 05/06/2017 12:39

YY, totally standard amongst my teacher friends.

And for sick leave too.

divadee · 05/06/2017 12:40

I have done exactly this but with a week. I am not a teacher but I am support staff and I go back for 1 week at the end of term and them off for the summer. We only get SMP and I couldn't afford to go back later than September.

fanfrickintastic · 05/06/2017 12:59

All teacher friends I know have done this too. But you'll need to notify them soon if your going to - they need 28 days notice.

Ionacat · 05/06/2017 13:02

Our HR person told me to do it! We don't accrue annual leave whilst on maternity leave in the same way as other jobs so go for it with a clear conscience.

Spinachinmyteeth · 05/06/2017 13:08

My friend who's a teacher was told to do this. Baby born in November, back in July for three days, fully paid over the summer.

MrsHathaway · 05/06/2017 13:12

I stand corrected re timing your notice, but you still need to get a wriggle on!

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 05/06/2017 13:15

I'm doing this too, going back in for a TD Day on the last day of term, yanbu to do it

MrsHathaway · 05/06/2017 13:17

Incidentally, if you had been working all this year you'd still expect to be doing some planning etc during the summer holidays, and you'll definitely need to this time, so why on earth shouldn't you get a pay packet while you're doing so?

Herbie22 · 05/06/2017 13:24

Thank you. I have emailed HR. Fingers crossed they agree :-).

I'm doing a similar thing. My SMP runs out at the beginning of July so I'm going back full time for two weeks and then I'll start part time from September. It was my Head who suggested I do this Smile

winewolfhowls · 05/06/2017 15:36

Everyone totally does this! It's not just the money, it's a week or two to get your classroom ready, gather info on new classes, write sow for new courses or classes, and generally be able to hit the ground running for September.

Kokusai · 05/06/2017 15:58

+1

PotteringAlong · 05/06/2017 16:03

I've done it twice. In fact, with dc2 I had a due date of the first week of September so I worked the training day the first day back, went on maternity leave and then went back for the last week in July and got paid for the 6 weeks both sides Blush

Serafinaaa · 05/06/2017 16:05

I'm going back on 24th July first day of holidays! Don't go back the week before!

gottaloveascamhun · 05/06/2017 16:07

I've also done it twice. Do it!

Whatsername17 · 05/06/2017 16:54

My first day back at work is the first day of the summer holidays. I'll get paid for the summer despite not being at work.

Whatsername17 · 05/06/2017 16:56

In other jobs you can save up your holiday to tack on to your Matt leave. We can't do that. I don't feel guilty at about it.

ScottyK · 05/06/2017 17:14

Legally you can go back on the first day of the holidays and get paid. I did this, annoyed the head but legal.

early30smum · 05/06/2017 17:23

Go for it. Everyone I know does/has!

Waffles80 · 05/06/2017 17:37

Absolutely. Tried to time my first pregnancy to enable me to do this.

Nailed the timing...had premature twins so ended up being way off!

Waffles80 · 05/06/2017 17:40

Also OP, can you do any KIT days before the end of term?

tinypop4 · 05/06/2017 17:49

I did this . Had a baby in November went back a week before the summer holidays in July. I know a lot of people who do it it's expected!

noimaginationatall · 05/06/2017 17:49

You may not need to actually go back on. I went back officially at the beginning of June but took holidays until the end of June so was back on full pay from beginning of June. See if you have accrued any holidays and when you can take them.

PotteringAlong · 05/06/2017 17:52

See if you have accrued any holidays

She's a teacher, that's the point of the thread!
