Neighbour parking their moped

CruCru · 04/06/2017 23:40

My neighbour has bought a brand new, fancy looking moped. They've parked it right in front of their house, chained to a lamp post. This should be fair enough, only it's right in the middle of a massive parking space and means that the rest of the space is now unusable (unless others park their motorbikes there).

I can't decide whether I am being unreasonable. On the one hand, they probably are parked legally. On the other, this is the sort of north London street where parking spaces are hard to come by so parking in a way that means that no one else can squeeze their vehicle in seems quite antisocial.

All the houses are terraced and there are no driveways or marked out parking spaces - you just have to take what you can get on the street.

AIBU?

What other options do they have? I think that would define whether they are BU. is it the only place that they can chain it? Ultimately though if it's legal, it's not BU. maybe slightly unneighbourly.

Usually people with motorbikes park them at the end of the legal parking or in a small gap between cars.

Yes, I think that is probably the word for it (unneighbourly).

there are no marked spaces....as long as they are not blocking any entrances all is ok

CruCru · 04/06/2017 23:48

You could fit two small cars or one large car / van in that space.

the only thing that bothers you is being able to see the tarmac, if it was any other vehicle you wouldn't have noticed.
If you just park a bike it can be lifted into the back of a van and stolen. Its best to chain it to something. I'm surprised the other bikes aren't also chained to the post, making that the bike bay.

lostpigeon · 04/06/2017 23:51

I thought there weren't marked out spaces though? so officially it's not a space that you can define?

lostpigeon · 04/06/2017 23:53

are you scared you might have to walk 60 yards to get in your car? instead of right outside your door?

CruCru · 04/06/2017 23:53

No, that's true, there aren't defined spaces. However, when we all park, we make sure that we make efficient use of the space so someone else could get in as well. So if there was a big space, I would park on one end of it rather than right in the middle.

It isn't the sort of street where you can assume that you'll be able to park outside your front door.

The are not unreasonable. Mopeds are incredibly easy to steal and the safest place for it is chained to the lamppost. Just because they chose another vehicle doesn't mean they have less right to an available space.

CruCru · 05/06/2017 08:46

Yes, perhaps I am being a bit unreasonable.

I think YABU. Perhaps if this becomes their regular spot, the cars can park so that the space isn´t so big in future?

strugglingwithmaths · 05/06/2017 09:07

You'll have loads of people posting who'll tell you yabu. They probably don't live in London! In our small London street parking is an art and no space is wasted and under-utilised- it's quite common to have neighbors ring our doorbell to ask us to shuffle our car up a bit so they can squeeze their car in!

We had a similar situation with a motorbike- I think my next door neighbour actually had a word with him and now it parks at the end of the street chained to the last lamppost. We know he had an absolute right to park wherever- but he understood, was nice about it and is happy to walk another 16 seconds to his house! You could try talking to him?

CottonSock · 05/06/2017 09:10

You are not being unreasonable. Someone would probably leave a note if they did that here (not london)

CruCru · 05/06/2017 17:18

Thanks all. The moped was gone this morning and now there is a massive van in that spot.

The idea of someone having a regular spot to park in is rather novel. It doesn't happen here, we just have to take what we can find (which is sometimes a couple of streets away).

"Fancy looking moped"

Does not compute

CruCru · 05/06/2017 17:39

Yes, it looks like one of these things.
