AIBU to give 6 weeks notice?

I've been offered my dream job. Problem is I only started my current job in March. I feel rotten as my current job is deeply rewarding and I love it (only part time and poorly paid but it's so lovely).

I want to give them ample notice. WIBU to provide 6 weeks notice?
Reasons would be firstly, to give them time to advertise/for the transition. I've literally just started and i don't want them to think I'm completely heartless. we're going on holiday just after my enddate and I don't want to mess them around for holiday etc as annual leave times are precious as other staff have kids etc.

You'd be exceptionally gracious to give 6 weeks notice then. It's lovely you want to help your current job in such a way. What did you specify your notice period would be when applying for your new job?

It wasn't requested due to the nature of the new job (I don't want to go into details). but it's the other side of our holiday and I want a breather before the move.

If I understand correctly then, you already have a planned start date for your new job? in that case just work out when you want to finish your existing job and give that much notice.

Yes I agree you'd be exceptionally gracious, but bear in mind if your notice is just a week, this could potentially back fire on you? And maybe your work could let you go earlier in which case you may be out of pocket? Worth bearing in mind maybe.

You could offer 6 weeks, but they'd be within their rights to say 1 week is fine by them, and then you'd be out of work for 5 weeks. Make sure you speak to them before you agree a start date with the new place. Congrats on the dream job!

I am a teacher. If I handed in my resignation now I would not be able to leave until Christmas.

I would wait until you have signed the contract for your new job and then hand in your notice. Obviously you will also need to follow what it says in your contract.
