Carrying first aid kits?

TigerShark · 04/06/2017 07:04

In the wake of another terror attack, I want to ask what people carry if they carry first aid equipment on them.

After Westminster I inserted a couple of packs of Celox granules into the side of my handbag (along with the gloves and a pocket mask).

I have a few plasters in the bottom of my handbag and some anti bacterial wipes but that's it. Not sure anything else is needed.

WhooooAmI24601 · 04/06/2017 07:19

I have Celox granules in the medicine cupboard but nothing in my bag/car. Which is silly, really.

StandardNameHere · 04/06/2017 07:19

Always had a first aid kit in the boot of my car.
As for actually carrying around with me I have two toddlers so a giant baby bag which has antiseptic wipes, plasters and dressing.
On my keys I have a CPR face shield.
I was a paramedic many moons ago so may be over thinking the in case of emergency

ifyoulikepinacolada · 04/06/2017 07:25

No but I refresh my first aid certificate every three years. Not had to use it yet but I think it's really important to have an idea what to do!

UnbornMortificado · 04/06/2017 07:26

Yes but I was a carer so it's just habit.

PhoenixJasmine · 04/06/2017 07:29

That's not a bad idea at all really, thanks for posting OP. I keep gloves/pocket mask in my car first aid kit (with all the usual stuff as well) not a bad idea to put together a small portable one as well and add a few additional trauma items. Perhaps some burn dressings/gel as well?

First aid/first responder training should be emphasised as well though.

Suntrapped · 04/06/2017 07:33

Just plasters and antiseptic wipes.

I refresh my basic life support training every year. But I wouldn't give mouth to mouth to a stranger even with a mask- they almost always vomit and the mask doesn't protect you against infection. Guidance now is just give cardio and wait for paramedics.

We carry a rather large first aid kit in the car (for human or animal use) as well as spare dog leads, several blankets and halters/leading trains for horses. There's also a couple of large sticks for loose cows (which we get lots of!)

In my bag I carry several packs of non-fluffy dressings and tape (DD2 is very clumsy) and I've got a CPR mask on my keys. I also always make sure I'm wearing at least 2 layers so if needs be I can use my tshirt for heavy bleeding. I got caught out once with a stab wound after a fight and ended up in my bra and shorts in front of a lot of people.

PurpleWithRed · 04/06/2017 07:44

Always, comprising a couple of pairs of gloves and my up to date knowledge. IMO knowing what to do is by far the most important thing in my first aid kit.

evilkitten · 04/06/2017 07:47

I carry a field dressing when I'm in a city/crowded location. It lurks at the bottom of my bag. It's small, light and robust, but utterly useless for a cut finger.

TigerShark · 04/06/2017 07:51

I've just added some burns dressing into my handbag too - thanks Pheonix.

I totally understand why people don't want to give CPR because of the vomiting. Thankfully, the only time I have ever had to do CPR I got a warning they were going to vomit; then I was terrified they'd aspirated into their lungs - it made me way more nervous to continue.

Definitely agree with this point - "First aid/first responder training should be emphasised as well though" - also the SAM app is worth signing up to if you are first-aid trained.

I have a first aid kit in my car and it could actually do with a sort through to see if it needs updating. What are celox granules? I am due my first aid update next year so much remember to sort that out.

Sunnysidegold · 04/06/2017 07:55

Just googled celox, an interesting product will order some

JennyGreenteeth · 04/06/2017 08:08

With the latest advice you would only need the cpr mask for giving rescue breaths to drownings/ young children/ babies as anyone else they advise to do only chest compressions until help arrives.

First aid training is the most useful thing you can have, it gives you confidence that you can help.

PocketNiffler · 04/06/2017 08:31

I was told that the advice had changed to encourage people to do cpr in the first place, should still do breaths too if willing/able.

Redsippycup · 04/06/2017 08:32

I always have a first aid kit in the car, but having used it in 3 traffic incidents it really needs refilling - thanks for the reminder!

I don't carry anything on my person though, and I hadn't thought about celox, that's a good idea.

falcon5 · 04/06/2017 08:33

This has reminded me to go and book course. I'll also order granules thank you. As an aside, growing up my family always emphasized preparation and channelling anxiety into actions - so always go through emergency exits at hotel first thing on getting to room, carry a torch, get on a boat review emergency procedures etc. It's fairly dull to be fair and we all eye roll at each other but it's healthier than just being anxious and can be very needed.

PhuqIt · 04/06/2017 08:35

I'm a healthcare professional so have a few bits and pieces in my car, including bandages, O2 sats monitor, BP machine, breathe mask and even adrenaline complete with needles and syringes. Shame we tend to use DHs car when we go anywhere though as it's posher (and mine is full of nursing shit)

SoupDragon · 04/06/2017 08:39

If you are ordering stuff, make sure it comes from a reputable source. There was a slot on one of the Fake Britain type programmes about fake trauma tourniquets that had even round their way into several NHS Trusts.

specialsubject · 04/06/2017 08:41

I am first aid trained - I carry a kit for life threatening stuff but only when I have a bag with me, which isn't always. I'll get hold of a keyring face shield, good tip. And go re read the book today!

Giddyaunt18 · 04/06/2017 09:23

I'm first aid trained and ever since I have carried a disposable facial shield for mouth to mouth and a packet of aspirin for heart attacks in my handbag which is normally with me.Also have a first aid kit in the car.

Giddyaunt18 · 04/06/2017 09:25

Yes still do breaths in CPR, it increases the chance of survival massively from something like 30% without to 70% or more with breaths. If no shield you can breathe through a thin scarf or tissue with holes if necessary.

DeeNR · 10/06/2017 13:24

Plasters, antiseptic wipes, sting relief, aspirin and a blanket in the car
