Deliveroo Orders for London Hospitals

TigerShark · 04/06/2017 06:50

Does anyone know which hospitals?

I assumed MTCs plus Tommy's?

I am thinking of putting deliveroo orders together for staff at the hospitals so they have easy to eat food (pizza and chips etc)

Message from MNHQ: OP has asked us to update this post, saying Deliver probably not the best idea. However, this is a lovely thread with lots of other great ideas, so we didn't want it to be deleted altogether.

thats a really kind thought.

fakenamefornow · 04/06/2017 09:43

My response to this is going to be random acts of kindness to strangers. Any suggestions for kind acts?

TigerShark · 04/06/2017 09:43

@fakenamefornow Do you think that is something that could be set up? I would be pretty interested in doing it but i don't know the first way about how to go about it.

Your suggesiton is awesome - it would be great to have funds available for when this happened and a network in place to deliver to the hospitals for staff (having liased with hospitals about best type of things that could be delivered - maybe good for families as well).

I know in Manchester they asked for sandwiches, salad bowls, fruit etc for hospitals. Not sure if that was mainly for families but I'd imagine for staff pulling a double shift or similar too.

Coulddowithanap · 04/06/2017 09:49

There is a charity doing this. They are the rapid relief team.
They supported the emergency services in Manchester providing food and drinks.

Ice, kind idea but...... lots of parcels arriving might actually create work for some of the staff. Personally I think it's not just when there is an incident- the staff work long hours and frequently/ usually miss meals on a daily basis. I know my two daughters (junior doctors) go twelve or thirteen hours without so much as a drink. One was told off the other day for eating a biscuit in the ward office - she had been working eleven hours at that point. The Idea of food parcels is really nice but probably easier to deal with outside of incidents.

Why don't you go to your local mosque and talk to the people who worship there? They will now be facing another backlash from narrow minded people who think being a Muslim makes you a terrorist. Our local mosque (in Gravesend) are so hospitable and will take great pains to welcome everybody and answer questions on any aspect of their religion.
Fight terror with friendship.

fakenamefornow · 04/06/2017 10:04

Coulddowithanap

Had a little look at that charity, it's not exactly what I was thinking.

It's not hard to set up a charity. We could do it. Obviously it wouldn't be able to help in this case but maybe for the (inevitable) next one.

pringlecat · 04/06/2017 10:07

Don't hospitals have third party food outlets in them? I'm pretty sure I can picture an M&S at Guy's & St Thomas'.

Maybe the easiest option is to set up a tab for staff? The businesses already in the building catering will have already gone through the appropriate checks and they'll be conveniently located.

fakenamefornow · 04/06/2017 10:08

Why don't you go to your local mosque and talk to the people who worship there?

Yes, I will. I'll bring them some biscuits.

The only thing I don't like about visiting a mosque is that I'm not willing to cover my hair unless men are expected to do the same. Shouldn't be a problem if I'm just in reception though, before the shoes come off. Are biscuits halal?

fakenamefornow · 04/06/2017 10:09

Maybe the easiest option is to set up a tab for staff?

Yes, that's what I was thinking a charity could do.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 04/06/2017 10:10

Great idea but be sure to check whether the hospitals are allowing deliveries in.

Fab idea from buxton too. I'm going to try and find my local mosque. ISIS would like nothing better than to pit muslims against non Muslims and we should never give them them that satisfaction.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 04/06/2017 10:11

Fakename, if you stick to vegetarian foods I think you can't go wrong. That's what I plan to do.

TigerShark · 04/06/2017 10:22

Great idea Buxtonstill - I am going to do this over the coming days.

Also, I believe that halal food relates to meat produce only.

OP,

Some lovely thoughts and ideas collecting on your thread. Thank you.

A quick FYI, for anyone wanting to send messages of appreciation and support directly:

Organisations involved with the operation (list from the Met's [official] social media)

  • The Met Police (led by Counter Terrorism Command)
  • British Transport Police
  • City of London Police
  • London Ambulance Service (incl. Air Ambulance)
  • London Fire Brigade

[and OP's upthread list of hospitals, verified by LAS]

I was thinking handwritten cards or notes would be nice for them to read, when morale flags and exhaustion kicks in, but strongly doubt now possible/ wise in the present circumstances.

Facebook/ Twitter/ email it is, then?

And if anyone from the organisations above (or their loved ones) happens to see this thread: Thank you for all you do Flowers

LivingInMidnight · 04/06/2017 11:22

The mosque thing is a great idea but don't forget that it's Ramadan.

Buxtonstill · 04/06/2017 11:53

If someone asked me to cover my hair in a mosque I would be more than happy. The same as I am happy to remove my shoes/go in a separate entrance in temples in India and Thailand. It's just a matter of respect for others beliefs.
You won't need to take biscuits. At the local temples and mosques they are falling over themselves to be generous hosts and provide food and drink to guests. And it is invariably yummy.

And there is a Macdonalds at Guys hospital.

SealSong · 04/06/2017 12:01

Re halal food, check it doesn't have animal fat, gelatine or alcohol, in.

BikeRunSki · 04/06/2017 13:49

It's not always about what's available or having a tab/funds, it's sometimes about actually having a moment to get food. By sending food deliveries, it's there to be taken.

I was heavily involved in the flooding across Cumbria and Yorkshire in the winter of 2015. Shops were open, Welfare units were open, I had cash on me... but my workload didn't give me a minute to stop.

One morning, I walked into a bakery, having spent the night coordinating the deployment of temporary flood defences. I was in full branded uniform kit (Environment Agency, not blue light services). The shop was full of people waiting to pick up their Christmas cakes and goodies. The queue stepped aside and let me to the front with lots of "you go ahead, you're doing a great job". The server gave me a tray of 6 teas to take away and a bag of cookies. It was much appreciated by my workforce. A couple of weeks later, in the aftermath of the Calder Valley Boxing Day floods, someone put a Morrisons meal deal and a mug of tea in my hands about 3pm. I'd left home at 6am, and that meal deal was my lunch. I had a packed lunch with me, but the pressure on us was so great, we'd barely stopped for a wee.

ComingUpTrumps · 04/06/2017 20:22

OP this is such a fab idea! :) What do you think about setting up a fundraising page on JustGiving or similar, maybe? And then everyone could chip in, and we could keep on bumping the thread.

(Sorry if this idea has already been mentioned by the way! I've just seen the thread).

TigerShark · 08/06/2017 18:27

@ComingUpTrumps I am happy to set something up - I think it needs to be registered as a charity and I would need (having now spoken to one hospital) a name of a member of staff in the hospital to address the delivered food too - I've had a pretty shocking week with health so had to stop then but the next step would be to set up a small charity name with a bank account and get justgiving set up (or a website platform for people to fundraise without paying the fees); the other idea would be to do a crowdfunder campaign for people to fund raise - which i kind of like too but I have never done one before
