parking on the street?

Yesterday I got lost, so I pulled into a road, parked up and called my friend (who I was meeting).

I get a knock on my window and was told I wasn't allowed to park here. Pointed to a small sign that said parking on this private street was prohibited Confused

I really didn't think you could ban parking on a street? (No yellow lanes and not obstructing anyone's drive)

You weren't parked. You'd just pulled over temporarily to use your phone.

You can in certain situations quite legally - although you weren't actually going to park the person had no way of knowing that and could have been trying to save you a ticket

There are private streets where the owners have to pay for the maintenance and of course they can forbid parking - but even in that case someone was being a bit precious.

'Should I be allowed to park in a residential road?'

Pulls up a chair, grabs popcorn. Wink

It sounds like it is a private road so it is effectively a large driveway for which the residents share rights and responsibilities, it's not like a normal road, it would be like parking on a driveway or a farmer's field.

I'm curious ... just say I'd parked there for 2 hours then who exactly would give me a ticket? A private company?

It really depends, from my understanding though (willing to be corrected), if it is a private road then it obviously belongs to someone, they could theoretically call the police, they could also have a company that could clamp you or give you a ticket. Ofc none of these things might happen but given there's a sign saying no parking, you wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on if anything like that did happen.

I used to live in a private road, parking was not allowed for non residents. We had a very interesting neighbour who had massive stickers printed up - if anyone parked in the road he would put one of the stickers over the windscreen ( they were a bugger to remove). In theory I suppose all of the residents could have got together & employed a parking company but it was never enough of an issue to bother.

It's a private road. In effect it's no different to parking on some else's drive. No one would give you a ticket for that either.

but it would make a thread we could all enjoy

Nancy wouldn't that be considered damaging the car owner's property, though?

nancy75 · 03/06/2017 17:57

whooo Apparently not if you can remove it without leaving lasting damage. The neighbour in question was a retired judge & knew everything about it!

If it's a private road owned and maintained by the residents then you have no right to park there although I agree the person was being a bit precious for the sake of a phone call.
