I used to have a career. Now, after five years out, acquiring a higher degree, I can't even get interviews. Somewhere I took a wrong turning and now I can't find a way back to a place where I can make use of my talents. All I can see now is forty years of domestic administration and financial dependency, leading inexorably to poverty and decline.
Every rejection lessens my confidence and makes it harder for me to get back on the horse; but only by getting back on the horse can I have any hope of a future that consists of more than dragging myself through each day.
What is the answer?

It sounds like you need psychological help.

Just put your most recent or relevant jobs on the form - no need to go back to last century. A CV is just there to get you through the door to interview, rather than to rule yourself out.

What profession was it you were doing? That might give us some ideas.

In my view 'careers' only really exist in our own heads - no-one else is keeping score.

Sounds like you had a shite employer last time - don't let them ruin the rest of your life.

Are you in technology field? I deal with people who are mostly younger than me but I would not hire just younger people because I need older members of the team who have experiences and know best practices. Don't give up, you need to rebuild your confidence first maybe by going for volunteering activities or participate in projects even for free. You never know where opportunities will come from.
