Diva cups

DaffodilUpsurper · 01/06/2017 20:34

Am I the only one using Diva menstrual cups? I have started using the Diva cups and I just think they are bloody fantastic (excuse the pun!) I have used them now for a while and have not been able to discuss it as I'm too embarrassed. Honestly they are so much better than tampons. I'm saving so much money too. No dryness / itching and no leaking. I'm just so impressed. I once mentioned it to a group of friends and they all looked at me like some sort of gross alien. I've kept quiet since but would love to hear some views on those that have tried it. I read some bad online reviews originally about having trouble about getting it out and what proceeded to be a bit of a scary disaster zone but none of that happened for me. Is anyone else using them? What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance

First one sounds too big for you, wobbles

velvetsmoke · 01/06/2017 21:54

I tried a Meluna after losing my Mooncup and I prefer that as it has a ring handle and bigger capacity. The Mooncup used to leak on me as I used to have very heavy periods (actually I would fill the whole thing in 20 minutes with one huge clot). I have light periods now after gynae treatment so I only need to empty it at home once a day. I wear it throughout my cycle as it catches 'everything' so I don't sterilise it as it's hardly ever outside my body.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/06/2017 21:57

They sound really good - I know people are positively evangelical on here about them.

I couldn't use one though as I can't use internal sanpro (nothing goes up there without a shit ton of pain!)

AWaspOnAWindowInAHeatwave · 01/06/2017 22:05

Sorry for thread hijack but has anyone managed to make friends with softcup? I've tried and failed a few times. Love my Melinda though - the little ball thing fell off and I like it even better now.

AWaspOnAWindowInAHeatwave · 01/06/2017 22:05

Meluna not Melinda

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 01/06/2017 22:06

Me too
I think that if they were introduced globally and given to women in developing counties especially could be a game changer

Fantastic invention

I do think women pre birth can be a bit daunted by them though for understandable reasons !

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 01/06/2017 22:09

Mallow

It's like a cup and you kind of fold the top in half , think like the top of a hot water bottle - then you put the top in your vagina and it pings open

So you have a rubber cup under your cervix that collects the blood

Then you put your hand up - squeeze it and slowly pull it down and the blood empties into the loo

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 01/06/2017 22:11

Advantages are

Lasts for ages (I used to use 2 li let super )
No smell
You can't feel it once you get used to it
Lasts for longer
Cheaper !
Better for environment
And no rash

crazypenguinlady · 01/06/2017 22:16

I had a MeLuna cup before I got pregnant. I looooved it and am going to treat myself to a new one before my next cycle! Have always despised tampons as they make me feel dry and itchy, and towels are so uncomfortable and I just don't feel clean for some reason. I've used them for my last two periods since having my son in Feb but I'm done, done, done. Plus they make my fanjo smells like a car air freshener Hmm

Spread the mmenstrual cup joy Grin

Thank you! How high does it need to go? As high as a tampon?

Why can't I just be a proper grown up?!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 01/06/2017 22:27

Just get one ! Honestly you have nothing to lose (well About £18 !)

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 01/06/2017 22:28

How high? Slightly lower than a tampon - it's about the size of an egg cup made out of rubber Grin

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 01/06/2017 22:32

I used to use a mooncup but lost in in a move, I can't afford one though. Can anyone recommend a really cheap one? I keep seeing super cheap ones on amazon but not name-brand so I'm not sure how 'safe' they are- like medical grade silicon, but I'm not sure how important that is! Anyone bought a cheapy?

soapboxqueen · 01/06/2017 22:32

Tried mooncup once, got it stuck. Never again.

crazypenguinlady · 01/06/2017 22:35

Goldilocks, I previously had a MeLuna and am getting a new one soon. I loved it and it's about £11 so cheaper than the others.

Haffiana · 01/06/2017 22:47

Advantages:

Hygienic
No cotton fibres in your womb
No smell
Non-drying.
Utterly, supremely comfortable. If it isn't, then find a good mooncup forum and get advice on what you are doing wrong (usual mistake is trying to push it in too far or putting it in straight up) or on which brand might suit you best.
Some have much greater capacities than others so are better for heavy periods - ditto a good forum.
You don't need to carry anything else with you. If you think your period might start while you are eg in board meeting or on night out, then put it in in advance.
After a while if you happen to use a tampon again, you rwill ealise how utterly gross they are by comparison. I sometimes think that in a hundred years time they will teach kids about tampons in school history lessons and they will be horrified!

Disadvantages:
if it does leak then it can be fairly catastrophic!

It doesn't need washing after emptying if you are in a loo with no washbasin. Just put it back in. You don't need to rinse or even wipe. Just rinse when you get home.

You remove by gently pushing the side or rim in to break the seal around your cervix. Never by pulling the bottom - that can be painful and I think has put some people off. In fact many people remove the bottom stick or ring entirely as it can be irritating and poke out unless you have a particularly high-up cervix.

And they don't need 'sterilising' or boiling, ever ever Just wash with soap and rinse thoroughly after your period and allow to air dry. If it stains, then Miltons will sort that out.

Mustang27 · 01/06/2017 23:03

Used them for a good ten years think they are brilliant and my cycle is really heavy so I was surprised how well they worked and rarely have had a leakage but with tampons it was a 3 or 4 times a day thing.

PeaFaceMcgee · 01/06/2017 23:05

The mooncup I think is meant to sit low - mine is less than a cm inside.

PeaFaceMcgee · 01/06/2017 23:08

It needs to be placed as low as it will comfortably sit in the vagina. If any of the stem is sticking out of the vagina or causing any irritation or discomfort, you will need to gradually trim it

(Mooncup website)

So nobody should 'lose' it if it's put in properly. Having said that - sometimes mine tracks up a bit higher, but it's not meant to be anywhere like as high as your cervix.

Ollivander84 · 01/06/2017 23:11

Pea - mine works its way up to my cervix. Bad menstrual cup Sad

PeaFaceMcgee · 01/06/2017 23:12

Actually, just thought that my cervix comes down particularly low too during period... Ah well!

carjacker1985 · 01/06/2017 23:16

Bought my first ever mooncup today, got it in as I type! Bit nervy about first night with it in and potentialfor leaking, I'm over the heaviest days of my period though so fingers crossed it's okay. Feels weird because I'm so used to tampons, but it feels weird in that I can't feel a tampon in, if that makes sense? I can feel that I'm free bleeding, basically (although obv it's all being caught in the cup).

PurpleMinionMummy · 01/06/2017 23:18

Mine sits around my cervix! It wouldn't fit otherwise Grin

Voice0fReason · 01/06/2017 23:22

I remember when I first read about mooncups in the early days of a mums forum. I thought it was an utterly bonkers idea. Then I read a bit more and a bit more and was persuaded to give it a try. That was 15 years ago. It took a couple of months to get completely used to it but I was a convert by the end of my first period.

bear28 · 01/06/2017 23:44

I've had a mooncup in my cupboard for about 2 years. Never been tempted but I struggle with tampons (didn't used to) and pads just feel like I'm wearing a bloody nappy (literally!).

Do you not find when you empty it in the toilet the blood goes everywhere....
All over your hands...?
