My son wants to go away WITHOUT his cuddly monkey.

My student son is packing to start an internship on Monday. He has a complicated journey and has had to thin down essentials to fit in a rucksack and cabin luggage.
He has suits, a bath bag, sports kit.... However he has found that he can't fit everything in so has just put his lifetime companion on his pillow and is standing looking at monkey wistfully.
Am I unreasonable to have a small tear.

Could you send monkey on when he gets there? Tracked delivery of course.

Yanbu. Sad times when they grow up.
But here, have some cake & wine WineCake

kaytee87 · 01/06/2017 18:42

Aw yanbu. You could send him a daily picture of cuddly monkey monkeying around at home?

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 01/06/2017 18:44

Tell him if he wants access when he comes home you he needs to pay to mms regularly. .
(monkey maintenance services)
You aren't feeding and caring for free while he is away. .

Fletcherl · 01/06/2017 18:44

A good idea about the photo.....and cake... and wine.
I feel like this might be it and he might never come back for cuddles with monkey again.

Just letting you know that you need to give your cuddlable children a squeeze right now as they might grow up and go and do grown up stuff and leave their childhood companions behind and they are really unreasonable. They make you proud but it has happened in the blink of an eye.

Don't worry, he'll be home every time you fart looking his washing done and dinner made, and because of the housing crisis in a few years you'll probably get him back until he's 40 and saves up enough for a deposit on his own house Grin

wineoclockthanks · 01/06/2017 18:54

I feel your pain.

We came away on holiday and Ellie (the elephant), ds15's lifelong companion was left behind Sad.....

Well actually she wasn't, I snuck it in my case and DS's face when he saw her was lovely and the little hug he gave me to say thanks was even better Grin

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 01/06/2017 18:55

You are absolutely right about enjoying the little things and their quirks. I was helping DS (17) clear out his chest of drawers. He handed me a pile of "faffies" (muslin squares")and said that he didn't want them any more. This is the boy who couldn't sleep without one on his pillow!!! I'm heartbroken!!!!

BikeRunSki · 01/06/2017 18:58

I don;t know what your plans are for tonight, but don't watch Toy Story 3.

I am dreading this moment, and my youngest is only in Reception (waaaahhh she'll be in Class 1 in 3 months time).

wineoclockthanks · 01/06/2017 19:08

Oh, you're so right Bikerun , I embarrassed my entire family by sobbing through that bit of Toy story 3

Hissy · 01/06/2017 19:15

ds is on overnight camp... he had to explain to monkey that he had to stay and look after me, and main monkey of the house

And besides... he'd end up getting lost in the forest...

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 01/06/2017 19:28

Oh god, stop it with Toy Story 3. I made a noise like a flock of seals at low tide during that scene, and I've seen sudden deaths without more than a grimace and a smaller portion for dinner.

Fletcherl · 01/06/2017 22:03

Shhh don't mention Toy Story 3 in front of the monkey.

Send him a picture of monkey having fun at home every day. 😊

ohidoliketobe · 01/06/2017 22:08

My DS is 3 next month and has a beloved stuffed monkey. The thought that this could be him in 16 years time has sent me into a snotty mess. I'm going to have to nip in to 'check on him and give him a sneaky little cuddle and tuck him up.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/06/2017 22:09

Aww, DS was a little wistful when he went off camping with cadets and his collection of Mickey Mouses had to stay home. They have travelled the world with him, adding a new one every year, and all have variations on the name Michael Grin he still sleeps with them in his bed when he's home.
