Would you be allowed time off work if your dog died?

Maybe I'm being harsh, as I know it's a family member and not a pet.

But to have time off work ... I'm not so sure I'm that understanding.

My work place is compassionate. People get what they need and they understand that not all people need the same thing.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/06/2017 21:28

And those who said about their places of work being flexible about family commitments - I don't have any so that also contributed to me having a day off (in fact some of my extra hours are covering people that do have to rush off for children or aging parents etc - swings and roundabouts)

I would take annual or unpaid leave if my cat died. I work with a lot of cat lovers who would all understand as they did when I walked out of the office mid morning to take my cat to the vet when he was injured.

I was at a previous job when my Dad died and I was given 2 days compassionate leave and told I wouldn't be getting a bonus as I'd taken it. My bitch of a manager also asked me when I'd be back on the day he died as she was short staffed. I got myself signed off for a month.

Boring12 · 01/06/2017 22:05

Yes.. in a pet store. As long as you don't take the piss!

PlayOnWurtz · 01/06/2017 22:06

I would be allowed to work from home for a couple of days doing non customer contact work (read yes I would be able to)

Boring12 · 01/06/2017 22:08

Sorry that sounded a bit mean. I meant someone did take the piss and it didn't go down well.

Haffdonga · 01/06/2017 22:12

I gave someone a (paid) day off the other day because her cat had been run over. In our place you can have up to 3 paid days off a year for a personal or domestic crisis.

Mupflup · 01/06/2017 22:14

In my place we are very generous with discretionary / compassionate leave and managers can decide. If it was one of my team (where I have discretion) I would definitely give at least one paid day. My rule of thumb is if someone is too upset to function properly for whatever reason we should be kind enough to let them have a day at home and get themselves together. But then i know noone in my team would take the piss.

EmmaC78 · 01/06/2017 22:18

My boss said I could take a paid day off when my horse died. I took the morning off but only really because I had to make arrangements for him to be taken away. I was owed hundreds of hours of unpaid overtime though so felt OK about taking it. I probably wouldn't for a cat or dog though.

MovingtoParadise · 01/06/2017 22:19

I'd take the week off if my dog died unexpectedly

I work for myself so I'd give me the week off

DropZoneOne · 01/06/2017 22:37

I had to call in earlier this year and ask my boss if it was ok if I started a couple of hours later as I needed to take my hamster to the vet. He was fine and asked after hammy. Unfortunately it was not good and she had to be pts. I relayed this news and explained I'd be in soon. He replied to say I could work from home for the rest of the day. So whilst not time off, certainly sympathetic and understanding which goes a long way.

TweedAddict · 01/06/2017 22:44

I would be off for as long as I needed. Stuff work.

I do love my job but things like this get on my goat, I would happy take leave or have it unpaid, but I can't have any children so my dogs replace them for me. I know a lot of people don't agree with that statement but it's how I feel. Everyone is different, some people would need more time others less.

I would walk out of a job that didn't support me.

littleshoutymouse · 01/06/2017 22:45

I work in a Vets so I guess it comes with the territory, but yes, we are expected to take a day off (usually no more, and alway unpaid), or at least the remainder of the day if the euthanasia happens during working hours. Provided staffing levels are okay that day.

I wouldn't say my boss is understanding as such, but I think he recognises that in his chosen industry, if he were to refuse he'd be public enemy number 1. So he begrudgingly allows it if it's needed.

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 01/06/2017 22:47

I have a work colleague who took two days off when her degu died! 😲

MackerelOfFact · 01/06/2017 22:48

I took a day off work when my childhood dog died. I didn't tell my employers that was the reason, I just said I wasn't feeling too good - which was true, I was feeling pretty shit.

I would do the same now TBH. I only take about one sick day every two years, so I wouldn't feel at all guilty.

TheweewitchRoz · 01/06/2017 23:11

No, unless you use annual leave.
