What do you do to protect the environment?

Hi guys
I'm just wondering how many people are out there who cares about the environment. I'm extremely concerned of the damage we do to our Earth and to ourselves by littering, pouring strong chemicals down our drain, buying 5p bags each time we go to shopping, food wasting, leaving the house in the morning with already 100 chemicals on our skin, etc. So what do you guys do to protect yourself and the Earth?

We do lots. Recycling, composting, don't use pesticides, grow food etc.
None of it is going to make the slightest difference though. I think we're all going to hell in a hand-basket. Happy for someone to prove me wrong.

RedStripeIassie · 01/06/2017 15:32

I didn't used to do anything on purpose but probably was quite green. Didn't drive, no foreign hols, but I didn't recycle or anything. Now I recycle and grow veg and stuff. Still no foreign holidays but a car is essential.

araiwa · 01/06/2017 15:33

None of it is going to make the slightest difference though.

im not overly optomistic about the future but i believe doing as much as we can will help

HattiesBackpack · 01/06/2017 15:35

I don't run a car. I try to re-use or recycle as much as I can. (I'm actually pretty frugal generally when I think about it which I think helps in my own way just for not owning mountains of stuff I won't use)

Try and buy seasonal fruit and veg.
Just starting a veg and fruit plot in the garden.

Krisgoeco · 01/06/2017 15:36

I'm not overly optimistic about the future as well, especially that there are other things to be concerned in this world today, but I'd like to think that if we all just change one bad habit of ours, eventually that can make a difference. Or am I being naive?

BartholinsSister · 01/06/2017 15:45

I point my garden hose upwards sometimes, to slow the sun's expansion.

HattiesBackpack · 01/06/2017 15:46

I don't think you are being naive at all, all things help. Also, no matter what's happening in the world at the moment ultimately it will go on, it's important we look after it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/06/2017 15:47

Drive a diesel Wink

AnnieOH1 · 01/06/2017 15:47

I am probably extreme in some things but a nightmare in others. On the pro environmental side I bullied the council for a second general recycling bin, I buy canned drinks over plastics, except water where we use a cooler, we take as much as possible to the recycling centre for reclaiming rather than landfill. That said though I am conscious I use new dish sponges every day, use nitrile gloves for cleaning, use disinfectants etc - I am extremely anti bacteria and viruses post DHs cancer. But that forced me to recycle and make more conscious decisions. I try to buy local, I don't like pesticides (prefer citronella candles and sticky strips) and I try to buy previously recycled products where possible. =\

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2017 15:48

The world will go on regardless. We won't necessarily Grin

ohgoshIdontknow · 01/06/2017 15:50

Nothing, apart from doing the occasional fart.

PlymouthMaid1 · 01/06/2017 15:51

I compost, give toads a home, grow insect friendly plants, never fly and try not to make unnecessary journeys. I keep stuff til it falls apart and cant be mended any more. I use few chemicals and try not to buy food with loads of foodmiles.

Strokethefurrywall · 01/06/2017 15:52

I recycle as much as possible but we live on a tiny island in the Caribbean and our recycling capabilities aren't particularly advanced. We can do glass, paper, PET1 plastics.

We had a massive earth day clean up a few months back but education here is sadly lacking in the hard of thinking here and within days there was shit all over the place again.

I try and do my bit when I walk my dogs on the beach, and take a carrier bag to clean up whatever rubbish I find. But my carbon footprint is probably quite extensive as we have to travel by plane to get anywhere and I run a large SUV.

We can only do what we can do - as long as we have awareness of our environment.

Kursk · 01/06/2017 15:55

We do the following:
Grow our own veg,
Recycle/ compost
Use energy efficient bulbs
Heat our home with wood
Drive a diesel
Hunt/fish our own meat.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2017 15:58

Oooo where do you live Stroke? I want to move to the Corn Islands (in my dreams).

ghostyslovesheets · 01/06/2017 15:59

Not as much as I should but I do recycle everything I can, reuse and gift stuff, I cycle and walk but have to drive for work - long distance often, but drive a diesel

I try not to have heating, lights on etc

Ecclesiastes · 01/06/2017 15:59

I haven't had kids.

Anything less is just pissing in the wind.

KnockMeDown · 01/06/2017 16:00

How is driving a diesel protecting the environment? I have a Nissan Leaf, all electric, no emissions at all Grin

Kursk · 01/06/2017 16:04

KnockMeDown

Diesel is better for the environment, worse off human health. Petrol is the opposite.

Unfortunately neither an electric car PR public transport fit our lifestyle

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 01/06/2017 16:05

Recycle, compost, grow own veg & fruit, don't use pesticides, use a rain barrel for watering, do paperless banking/billing. Tried to do cloth nappies with the babies but failed miserably.

I could do more, probably.

SuffolkBumkin · 01/06/2017 16:08

Vegan, recycling etc. Bit worried the horse has already bolted though.

OwlinaTree · 01/06/2017 16:10

Recycle paper, plastic, metal etc
Use own shopping bags
Try to walk on local journeys
Energy saving bulbs
Don't run the tap while teeth cleaning, washing dishes etc
Use washable nappies and wipes
Meal plan to create less waste
No tumble drier.

Krisgoeco · 01/06/2017 16:11

I use bio products for washing, cleaning with no harsh chemicals. Also do the paperless billing, recycling and only buy 100% degradable bin bags and carrier bags. Probably could do more as well.

heyduggeeallday · 01/06/2017 16:15

I used too but gave up! I feel nothing we do will save us

DeadGood · 01/06/2017 16:25

Don't use a car, tumble dryer, sweep instead of hoovering.
Hardly throw any food away.
Eat as little meat and dairy as possible.
Re-use whatever I can.
Buy things like clothes and toys in charity shops.
Don't buy magazines or books unless they are really special. I get them second hand.
Take short showers. When I had a garden I collected the water for the plants.
Avoid kitchen disposables/consumables like tin foil, cling film, zip lock bags.
Avoid bathroom disposables like cotton pads, face wipes (I use a muslin), tampons pads or disposal bags (I use a mooncup).
Recycle anything I can.
I used to recycle all food waste (inedible things like egg shells and orange peels) when I had the facility (don't in my current place).
