To think the Labour Party are writing cheques they just cannot afford to cash

I am in absolute disbelief. The Labour Party are making more and more promises to end this, abolish that, pay for this, remove costs from that...

Am I the only who thinks they are writing cheques that they cannot afford to cash? Who out there honestly believes that they can achieve these things without imposing heavy taxes and fines on ordinary people? The rich are too rich to care, they have means to move money, find new tax havens, leave the country, invest elsewhere etc.

I believe in helping those who need it most, I believe that the NHS should have the funding it deserves, that children shouldn't live in poverty and that those who are most vulnerable should be able to get the help they need.

But I cannot see how all of this is possible without hitting the middle income earners, further widening the gap between the haves and have nots.

For starters, this land value tax (garden tax) is an absolute farce if it comes into force. Why should people be penalised because they live in an area where land is in demand and therefore prices are pushed up to compensate the lack of supply? It doesn't mean that they earn any more or that their struggles are any less.

Please help me come to decision on who I should be voting for.

carl - people don't just invest in a place for tax reasons. There are LOADS of factors, and many ways of making a place attractive to invest that don't involve lowering taxes. Check out Mariana Mazzucato's work on this.

They can't. Thry havnt even costed in how much nationalisation all the utilities will cost.

Try here but at least they have given out figures.

Both the Tories and Labour are writing cheques they cannot afford to cash. Brexit will bring significantly reduced trade and with it severe austerity.

Theresa May will do her best to save the wealthy.
Education and healthcare will be privatised. Workers rights will be removed. Zero-hours contracts on a reduced minimum wage will be the norm as a measure to keep British businesses competitive abroad after trade tariffs are applied on our goods and services.

Jeremy Corbyn will not be able to lessen the effects of Brexit but at least he will try to spread the pain. He will do his best to make sure the cutbacks don't fall inordinately on the less well off.

Lanouvelle - of course big corps invest in places with low tax rates. Why do you think Switzerland attracts so many big international companies? I live in Switzerland and know of several companies here (including the one my DH works for), which have a small office here with just the right number of employees in order that they can claim their head office is here. That is purely for tax reasons! With Brexit, we need to do everything we can to encourage large corps to invest in UK. If we can do that, it can only be good for the economy, which is good for everyone.

boney

They have no idea how much it will cost to te nationalise the railways etc. No one can know as no one can foresee the share price.

waitforitfdear · 01/06/2017 12:53

I just think some posters have no idea how business works.

I love corny s policies but they will not work. The money will be too much.

boney nurseries can't provide the free 15 hours now! How on earth will they provide 30??

PeterhouseMS · 01/06/2017 13:18

I just think some posters have no idea how business works.

How condescending, waitforitfdear.

alltouchedout · 01/06/2017 13:23

YABU.
Cannot be arsed to expand on this as I think you've made your mind up, also don't have patience for the flurry of "you don't know how the world works" condescending replies I'd end up getting.

StormTreader · 01/06/2017 13:24

So the OP is "Labour are saying theyre going to spend money they dont have. AND theyre trying to raise money!"

MacarenaFerreiro · 01/06/2017 13:25

That's pretty much the whole point of the Labour party though - spending. They want a bigger public sector, more freebies. The COnservatives advocate a hands-off and sort yourself out position.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 01/06/2017 13:32

Of course Corbyn can lessen the effects of Brexit, he can do so by remaining in the Single Market. He won't do it because of his UKIPsque immigration views. Frankly this is my issue with Corbyn and why I can't vote labour. He talks the talk about not wanting to make disadvantaged peoples lives harder yet refuses to commit to doing the main thing that will avoid this!

Thegirlinthefireplace · 01/06/2017 13:33

By that I mean all the tax rises in the world won't help if no ones got any money and there's no business here.
