Taking photo of stranger without permission

Totally inappropriate right? I'm on a train sitting opposite a passenger who I believe to be Dustin Hoffman. It is probably not but thats not the point. Friend has asked me to secretly take a pic for her. Do people do this?! She was surprised when I said no. AIBU to refuse?!

So? People only take photos of strangers so they can put them on the Internet for abuse. Marital rape used to be illegal, it didn't mean that fighting back was wrong. You can use the it's legal defence for obnoxious, invasive and abusive behaviour but one day you'll get caught doing that to the wrong person.

PlayOnWurtz · 31/05/2017 20:45

Abuse? Really?

HildaOg · 31/05/2017 20:47

Why else would you take a picture of a stranger?

PlayOnWurtz · 31/05/2017 20:48

And I can't believe you're comparing photography to rape.

PlayOnWurtz · 31/05/2017 20:48

For art

WingsofNylon · 31/05/2017 20:49

Look at the following photographers:
Vivian Maier
Bruce Gilden
Henri Cartier-Bresson
Marc Riboud

Many many more out there if you care to look. It's art.

PlayOnWurtz · 31/05/2017 20:50

Yes for wings it's for gossip purposes Grin

NotHotDogMum · 31/05/2017 21:20

I'm sure Dustin is used to being papped Grin

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 31/05/2017 21:34

I'm sure Dustin Hoffman doesn't take trains Grin

SaucyJack · 31/05/2017 21:56

"I'm sure Dustin Hoffman doesn't take trains"

Is that because he's an excellent driver

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 22:00

I play Pokemon Go, and I have a collection of players in my town with their usernames beside them Grin I like to know whose who and who is on my team.

I'm not going to post them online or do anything nefarious with them, and it's not illegal to take photos of strangers, so I don't see the problem.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 22:02

some stranger took a picture of me I would take the fucking phone off them and delete it. Or throw it out the train window

Taking pictures is silent; you'd never know. People are perfectly entitled to take all the photos of you they want. Don't like it? Don't go out in public.

People only take photos of strangers so they can put them on the Internet for abuse.

That's bullshit.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 31/05/2017 22:03

I'm an excellent driver ha ha I got the Rainman reference.

But no Dustin avoids trains after a disturbing incident when a Mumsnetter spent an entire journey peering at him whilst frantically typing on her phone.

EyeDrops · 31/05/2017 22:41

I figure that you it's very hard to avoid taking photos of strangers in public, e.g when taking holidays photos or photos on a trip out. Therefore it must be ok/legal to - but yes, morally dubious if you are intentionally taking a photo of a stranger (rather than them being in your background).

I did, once - of a man the absolute double of my brother - from a distance zoomed in. Just to show close family/friends to say, "Look, doesn't this guy look just like XXXX!", but certainly not shared online etc. I did feel guilty though!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 31/05/2017 23:01

EyeDrops "Morally dubious"? Confused It's not "morally dubious" at all.

And I don't feel at all guilty about my collection of Pokemon Go players in my town.

PlayOnWurtz · 31/05/2017 23:19

People are fascinating why wouldn't you want to take photos of them?

WingsofNylon · 01/06/2017 06:54

ilost Grin that made me laugh hard!
