AIBU to be really annoyed when people say sorry when they mean excuse me?

I was in the supermarket today looking at shampoo when I heard someone behind me say 'sorry' I didn't react as nothing had happened to me, second 'sorry' came and again I didn't react, I hadn't been hit or bumped or had something dropped on me so wasn't aware it was directed at me. She then shouted 'SORRY' right in my ear clearly to get my attention that she wanted to get past me with her buggy. I immediately said oh I'm so sorry and moved out of her way and she pushed past muttering about rudeness to her companion. Had she have said excuse me at the start I would have turned immediately to see what I was being asked for or even tapped me on the arm. AIBU sorry and excuse me are not the same thing.

I saiid "excuse me" to a woman inn Monsoon once and nearly attacked me as apparently I had been rude by not adding "please" at the end. I sort of thought it was unneeded as I said "thank you" when she moved. Odd.

If someone was stood by me saying "sorry" I would have absolutely no clue they were wanting to get past me. I would assume they were apologising to someone in the vicinity. If you want to get past you say "excuse me" "excuse me please" "can I just get past you please?" Never sorry, it's not even the same thing at all. Yanbu op.

But 'excuse me' MEANS sorry!
'Excuse me' is just short for "excuse me for bothering you, could I get past?" Which is exactly the same as "sorry for bothering you, could I get past?". Which can be shortened to 'sorry'.
You sound very silly actually

Oh my lord- this irritates me SO much and my DH just doesn't get it!
It's so confusing, delays my reaction time because I'm wondering why they are sorry!
YADNBU!!!

I say sorry all the time , I don't like saying "excuse me" it sounds impatient

FreeSpiritJen · 30/05/2017 19:32

I don't think anyone ever does that to me.

I have people saying 'sorry?' when they haven't heard what I said.

But not when they are trying to get past. Only if they knock me IYSWIM.

I say sorry instead of excuse me. Usually with can I just... After "sorry, can I just squeeze past/reach that thing/get a trolley" I actually find excuse me a little passive aggressive
