Pregnancy food guidelines

Currently on my 2nd pregnancy and already the "it's a wonder any of us had children because back in my day we lived off Stilton, raw eggs and three week old uncooked beef washed down with a pint of gin" is pissing me off.

Is it so fucking hard to believe that in 30 odd years the human race has learnt something?

Do think I just make things up to be difficult? FFS.

My stalwart answer is that we had a higher rate of infant mortality/miscarriage back then.

NB: Comments usually from my mother or MiL, both of whom buy homeopathic remedies...

[Pregnant lady hormonal rant over, as you were]

I don't like being told what I should/shouldn't do by people who haven't even had kids.

Someone I work with tried talking me out of my tuna mayo sandwich a while ago. Shouldn't eat tuna or mayo. At all while pregnant apparently. My midwife and the guidelines say different. Limit it yes. Avoid completely no.

Similarly I've limited caffeine.

And have eaten peanuts (another one which caused childless colleague (by choice not medical reasons) to get all flappy)

I've had the occasional glass of wine too.

I'm fairly relaxed about things. Everything is good. Baby boy is growing as he should. my midwife said that i should have things if I fancy them. I really wanted a fried egg the other day. So had one. Runny yolk and all. My god it was delicious. Then I worried about it. Then went horse riding (am 22 weeks at present). Dh pointed out I was a bit silly to worry about the risk of an egg yet hop on the back of a horse and canter round a field.... he made an excellent point.

It's surprising your mum's experiences haven't made her super anxious and checking up on everything you consume! I think you could cut her a bit of slack - for all your knowledge of her past has made you more anxious in your pregnancy, she is the one who had to live through that horrendous experience multiple times (you may guess that I've been in the same boat).
People treat you like public property when you're pg, it is indeed annoying.

Isn't the miscarriage rate in most developed countries broadly similar though?

Despite guidelines for what to eat and what to avoid varying quite significantly?

Ugh, people watching what I eat and drink really annoys me. Even the midwife said having more than one glass of cola a day would cause miscarriage... said in a very blasé way and not in line with the NHS guidelines. I've completely cut out pate as the risk is in too much vitamin A and isn't just a chance it may have an effect; you can't get away from the fact it contains vitamin A. I've limited fish and caffiene to the guidelines, changing to caffiene free diet cola and decaf coffee, but having normal cola when I'm out and about and can't get caffiene-free. I've given up alcohol completely from day 1 and finally given up smoking (which I feel incredibly guilty about) by week 18 (I'm nearly week 21 now and curse myself for not managing earlier). Everything else I've taken with a pinch of salt to be honest and judged myself - if something feels/looks/smells not right, I listen to my body and don't eat it.

But people lecturing me not to have a tuna butty makes me want to have one even more tbh!
