To think I should not have been turned down for £300 credit in Ikea

Never happened to me before- so embarrassing. It would have been about £30 a month ffs I am on £45000 and plenty left over each month.

I have about £6k on other interest free cards and a car loan but have never missed a payment and it is all affordable. I get 4/5 on noodle or whatever it is called.

Just why??,

No, being married to someone makes no difference. It's only if you have joint finance with someone.

You could go into business with a friend and take out a joint loan and then you would be financially associated with them.

Well if that is how all lenders view things it beats me how anyone ends up in the levels of debt that people do. Or why credit card companies routinely inform people that they've raised their limit without being asked to. They'd be out of business if no one 'lived beyond their means' as you call it. I don't - I can meet at monthly payments with plenty left to spare. Once I know where I am financially I will throw all that at the cards and, assuming no expensive emergencies occur, I should be debt free within a year.

Don't take it personally. I haven't seen your report so it's all assumption on what you've said.

There are credit card companies aimed at people with bad credit (hence the ridiculous apr) that anyone can get accepted for.

Pay day loans (Wonga, QuickQuid etc) are also so easy to get accepted for. Not hard to see how people can get into debt.

MixedUpShookUpGirl · 27/05/2017 12:17

Check your credit rating!

Sometimes things happen - without your knowledge!

e.g. a phone bill not paid etc etc

theduchessstill · 27/05/2017 12:19

Yes, I get that, but all my existing credit is with reputable very well-known companies - banks and building societies. I have had no trouble at all getting credit since becoming a home owner 14 years ago. Most credit I have had over the past 4 years has been balance transfers, rather than 'new debt'. The big exceptions are my car, which I had to do, and adding to my mortgage. This is not just incidental spending caused by me buying more stuff than I can afford.

Ex has debt all over the place and recently I accidentally opened some mail for him that came here. It was from Lloyds offering him a credit card for people who may struggle getting credit with what they termed 'a manageable £1500 limit to start with.

Have you taken out some form of payment protection for all your debt, the unknown can and does happen. You currently earn a reasonable income and you may be able to cover outgoings but have you prepared for what you might do if you lose your job/become ill etc etc.

There are lots of useful sites on how to reduce amount of credit you have and better budgeting etc. This make be a positive thing and make you reassess how much you owe.

In this case the OP's main method of debt reduction has been to ditch the husband who ran it up in the first place. As plans go, I'd say that's a solid one.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 27/05/2017 13:11

Jesus some people need to read the OP's posts properly. The poor level of comprehension around here these days is driving me batshit.

duchess ridiculous isn't it. You can add a significant amount to your mortgage but not get £300 credit from IKEA Hmm.

I hope you can get it all signed off with your Ex soon. Then I'd get your lawyer to make sure you are totally separated from him financially. Totally separated.

I'm glad you were able to keep the house. (Clearly as a totally irresponsible spendthrift that can't have been easy 😂🤣. And I can't think why you'd spend £300 in one go at IKEA. I mean surely you can buy a wardrobe/bed/sofa piece by piece!? 😂🤣)

AnnieAnoniMouse · 27/05/2017 13:13

Gabilan. Yep, I'd agree with that 😊

theduchessstill · 27/05/2017 13:23

Flowers Galiban and Annie. I didn't want to be rude to the previous poster, but really... I think some people just see certain key words in a post (credit card in this case) and then go on to autopilot typing their standard response to that topic. It was similar on my school play thread.

I'm honestly at the end of my tether with people who either don't read the OP's posts or read them but have zero comprehension skills. MN used to be a great place for well thought out advice and a damn good debate. It's just getting far too 'nethuns-meets-dailyfail' with a side serving of 'plain stupid'.

HeyHoThereYouGo657 · 27/05/2017 14:32

I just LOVE people who boast how much obscene wages they get !

YABU . You can afford it without credit !

theduchessstill · 27/05/2017 15:00

£45K is hardly obscene for 12 years in a profession, or at all really. I only mentioned it because it was relevant to the post. I have explained why I would rather not pay it outright, but perhaps you also think I am boasting about my failed marriage and difficult divorce from a man now pleading poverty and blaming me, despite his own credit card addiction and work aversion.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 27/05/2017 15:11

I suspect it is your link with your ex that is causing you this problem. I have had the same trouble and thought I had cut all financial links to him but was still getting rejected. I realised it was because we were still both down as signatories on my ds's building society account! I closed the account, opened one solely in ds's name and my credit rating has recovered.

19lottie82 · 27/05/2017 15:20

OP get a credit check online and see if there is anything nasty going on there. As already pointed out if you've previously had any joint accounts with your ex (mortgages, utilities ect not just bank accounts) then you will be financially linked and if he has been irresponsible it will knock on to your credit rating.

PS to the people going on about credit "scores" you know they don't mean anything, right? No one can see your score apart from you.

Looneytune253 · 27/05/2017 15:22

I'm self employed and get turned down. My husband gets accepted, he earns less and has a poorer credit score. I have been turned down by my own bank haha.

Rosti1981 · 27/05/2017 15:31

I know it feels horrid to get turned down but it can happen straight after taking out a mortgage or similar, as it makes your credit rating wobble a bit I think. One time it happened to me was for a store card / credit card for about £100, I had no credit card debt and could definitely afford the repayments - it was just because I'd literally taken out a new mortgage a month before. I was quite embarrassed but it happens - it can be a computer says no type scenario rather than judgement on your ability to pay the credit back!

TroubleinDaFamily · 27/05/2017 15:37

45k is decent but it is not stratospheric either.

Leave the OP alone.

Cuppaoftea · 27/05/2017 15:45

Very likely due to your recent application to increase your mortgage.

CowParsleyNettle · 27/05/2017 16:01

4 credit cards, a car loan and an increase in mortgage sound like a lot. Don't forget things like phones and sometimes utilities will also be on your credit report. It all adds up.

If Noddle seems ok, check ClearScore which is Equifax based rather than Call Credit so may give a different score. Don't forget Noddle is done once a month so can be out of date.

Bluntness100 · 27/05/2017 16:03

I just LOVE people who boast how much obscene wages they get !

Obscene? It's a decent salary, but it's hardly obscene. 😂

peachgreen · 29/05/2017 15:21

Some lenders will turn you down automatically if you've had another application within the last X months, even if it was successful. Happened to me when I tried to open a current account!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/05/2017 16:31

I've no idea of why you wouldn't get it - I don't even have credit cards - but why be embarrassed? It's surely no worse than a card being refused in a shop. Mildly awkward, but I doubt anyone actually imagines you are trying to pull a fast one, so it's more annoying that anything else.

JaceLancs · 29/05/2017 17:02

I got turned down for credit in currys was only considering it as was interest free
Ordered item online paid in full and got quidco cash back so their loss
DM had same issue with pcworld which is part of same group they told her it was probably because she is retired (even though she has a bigger income than me!)
