Do you inform your neighbours that you are having a BBQ

Tidying the garden up and I've noticed a few of our neighbours all have washing out, my SIL is coming over today with the kids.

I'm currently filling the very large paddling pool... for when the kids finish school, BIL and Dh will sort the BBQ out, last night Dh also logged some wood for the chimera if it get cold later on.

Now thinking I haven't told the neighbours...

The gardens are not on top of each other.

Not unless you want to invite them too. BBQs don't have to be smoky if you do it right.

glitterglitters · 26/05/2017 14:41

Not normally. Unless it's like a birthday party type scenario that we're expecting to go on late. Then I invite the neighbours over too Smile

glitterglitters · 26/05/2017 14:42

We do have a gas BBQ though so less smokey

AnnieAnoniMouse · 26/05/2017 14:45

No

I dont expect them to tell me when they're cooking a roast or a curry either, all of which I can smell in my house/garden.

Sunny weather... BBQ, paddling pool, kids playing out ahhhhh the sounds & smells of summer. Make the most of it!

NotYoda · 26/05/2017 14:47

Yes

It would be nice if neighbours did it for us, but I don't expect it

RoseandVioletcreams · 26/05/2017 14:48

if we had smaller garden and close to windows - yes I would warn them casually....no one wants to suddenly be chocked out in this heat esp dc with breathing issues...

our gardens are quite spacious and long and we put ours which is gas anyway away from neighbours.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/05/2017 14:49

No.
Because dh is South African and we have a BBQ about 4 nights a week.

SilverDragonfly1 · 26/05/2017 14:50

I warn the neighbours an hour or two in advance if they have washing out and am prepared to be flexible about start times if they really need longer for it to dry. But my neighbours are lovely, so it's no hardship to consider their convenience. I might be a little less saintly if they were horrible!

In your case, I'd pop round and warn them, just out of politeness. Some people really dislike the smell of BBQ and don't want the least hint of it in their house or on their washing.

IAmTheWorwax · 26/05/2017 14:51

We never used to but our next door neighbour recently requested we let her know.
So in the interest of being good neighbours we now do.

greenworm · 26/05/2017 14:53

No. No one hangs out washing here. If they did, I guess I'd try to set up the BBQ as far away from the washing as possible.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 26/05/2017 14:53

Our gardens are large, and we dont have a gas BBQ (dont like them tbh) I always prefer coals, initially it is smokey, however it fades eventually and will be at the top tier of the garden as the children will at lower end.

No.

olliegarchy99 · 26/05/2017 15:11

Of course you should - really the manners and consideration in this country have gone to the dogs. Ditto for having a bonfire if the neighbours have the washing out.
OP - hope you do let your neighbours know especially as they have put the washing out and opened their windows. (which MOST people do in this sort of weather.Hmm)

MiddlingMum · 26/05/2017 15:17

We don't have BBQs. Our neighbours have told us in the past if we have washing out.

We tend to let each other know of anything like that, such as building noise, as it's just polite and community-minded.

gillybeanz · 26/05/2017 15:19

Yes, if they are at home and especially if they have washing out.
I like to be considerate though.
If it's an occasion for lots of people like a party, I usually invite them too.

ElphabaStrop · 26/05/2017 15:20

Only if you're about to do what one of my (actually lovely) neighbours did, which was to pour petrol on the bbq because it wouldn't light.

Fortunately I'd got the washing in but we did have windows open. Bit of a shock when there was a sudden "whoomph" from next door, followed by masses of black smoke. Grin

1stDinkyDecker · 26/05/2017 15:22

Yes if they have windows open, so they can decide if they want to close them or not.

Kursk · 26/05/2017 15:26

When we were living in the UK no, living in the US......still no.

Here our nearest neighbor is 5 miles so we do whatever we want.

PenguinOfDoom · 26/05/2017 15:29

No. None of my neighbours do either. I think it's a bit odd to go around telling all your neighbours you're having a BBQ.

SpringtoSummer · 26/05/2017 15:32

No, I'd warn for a bonfire but not a bbq - there's not that much smoke and everyone seems to have at least one a week in summer.

starfishmummy · 26/05/2017 15:43

We did when we first moved here but no one else does. We tend to bbq in the evening so less chance of neighbours having washing out -they bring it in early in case it gets darked on
However the woman next door wil bbq at lunch time usually when I have a lineful out.

justkeepswimmingg · 26/05/2017 17:27

If my NDN had washing out, I'd do the polite thing and just give them a heads up that I'd be having a BBQ. I don't mind the smell of BBQs so having the windows open wouldn't bother me, but walking around in clothes that smell like smoke would.

Louiselouie0890 · 26/05/2017 17:50

I would if they had washing out. It's just polite. Spent the day doing laundry for it to end up smelling like smoke.
