We have a new kitten and want to name him Jacob Grin but that's our top name for a boy. We don't want children for at least another 5 years. AIBU?? To think the now comes before the future.

Don't do it! I know someone who named their dog the name they wanted for their daughter. They changed the poor dog's name before eventually shipping her off to a new home when the baby arrived when they got bored of her

We are considering my eldest cat's name if we have a daughter! If you know in advance you want it I would save it!

MissisBee · 26/05/2017 02:19

I know a couple who gave their daughter the name their previous cat had (at least, I think the cat was previous by the time the daughter arrived). When the birth was announced, I remember thinking "wasn't that the name of their cat?" and thinking it was a bit odd. Also the name is Katrina (cos Kat the cat was funny!)

If it's still early days in the relationship, I'd go ahead and use the name.

SuperBeagle · 26/05/2017 03:45

My last cat lived to the age of 21.

If you want to use the name Jacob for a child, give your cat a different name. I'm always a fan of animals having completely awful human names ie Norman, Gerald, Greg, Susan, Janis, Marjory etc.

PhoenixJasmine · 26/05/2017 04:30

Why is Greg awful?!?

SuperBeagle · 26/05/2017 04:34

Just is Grin it might not be in the U.K. But where I am it is considered in the same league as those other names.

nooka · 26/05/2017 04:41

I wouldn't if you really love Jacob for a possible son OP, as the name will become too synonymous with your cat. On the other hand in five years your taste in names may be quite different.

Personally I prefer to call pets names I wouldn't call a child as it's an opportunity to have a bit of fun. ds tells me he is planning to name his future cats after dictators and military leaders (ie Bonaparte, Benito etc). He's not planning on children though!

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 26/05/2017 06:24

I would just use it.

And you might have a girl! Also, no matter what name you had in mind for a future child, when babies arrive quite often they they just don't look like a 'whatever' name you always thought you'd have.

Newmanwannabe · 26/05/2017 08:14

I didn't pick the name I liked for a baby for my cat, as I wanted to save it, But when my friend had a baby she used the name so we couldn't use it anyway.

Btw, I love the name we did choose for the cat and he wouldn't be the same without that name

gabsdot · 26/05/2017 08:24

I called my cat my favourite girls name. We didn't have kids then and didn't think we ever would.
Dh didn't like the name though so it probably wouldn't have been used.
We adopted our kids in the end and they came with names so I'm glad I got to use the name I love for something.
