Neighbours have dog, they leave it in the garden most of the time. It barks at people walking past, it barks at planes flying overhead, it barks at nothing, on and on and on. I wish it would die. AIBU?

It will cause a noise nuisance, and you can complain to the Environmental Health.
JRT's are a working breed. One stuck outside with nothing to do all day will go berserk from boredom, like a Border Collie.
I bet they didnt realise how high energy they were before they bought one and cant be bothered with it indoors Angry

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 25/05/2017 19:57

Our delightful (not) neighbors let their dog "babe" out at 5.00am!
It then barks and barks to be let back in!!!!

Revenge will be ours though as he works nights and next week we start a massive building project with drills whirring for the next 5 months. He is an abusive bully so I don't have much sympathy for what awaits him.

Toast3 · 25/05/2017 19:57

We have happy dogs near us....they literally never stopped all day all night. 7am on a Sunday, midnight during the week. It drives us all nuts! We spoke to the owner who was a bit bonkers and told us they were just singing!!! ((WTAF!!)

We spoke to the council who sent us all forms to record incidents over a 2 week period....I also recorded it on my phone which was time and date stamped....everyone sent their forms back along with a letter and my recordings...the council wrote to her (and so did we) a very polite letter signed by 'all your surrounding neighbours' we told her we'd complained to the council.
They still yap but not for as long and not as often....
So success really....give it a try - it worked for us!!

Iris65 · 25/05/2017 19:58

I'll swop you a bull mastiff on both sides of our tiny terrace. They both bark frequently. One side shouts 'Shut the fuck up!' every so often and their dog is so aggressive that I am afraid to go into our yard. The other neighbour talks constantly to hers in a high pitched voice calling the dog 'darlin'' and saying 'no, no, no, don't do that darlin'' in between loud 'ah, ah, ah!' It starts around 6am and ends around midnight most nights.
Cannot wait until we move.

Toast3 · 25/05/2017 20:01

YAPPY not happy lol

LadyDeadpool · 25/05/2017 20:07

JRT's properly trained and looked after can be lovely dogs, mine is, he's deaf as a post so only barks if he spots a cat in the garden. He's never been a huge barker though and only used to stand at the door and let out a single woof to ask to be let back in. They're no worse as a breed than any other.

doyouthinkso · 25/05/2017 20:07

Horrible horrible sentiments expressed in your OP

Speak with the owner, speak with environmental health.

But to wish the animal dead is a disgusting attitude to have. You cannot justify that at all.

Didyoumeantobesorude1 · 25/05/2017 20:08

Thanks Toast, think I will have to do this. I'm just bewildered that we have to go through all that recording and reporting to Environmental Health because these people are oblivious/don't care? If I went outside and banged a dustbin lid for hours on end that would be the same but of course I'd never do that. Just cannot fathom the mindset of people who behave like this (and I do accept it's them, not the dog). Bastards.

What have your neighbours said when you spoke to them?

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 25/05/2017 20:21

You can train them not to bark, very easily. Since mine was a puppy, if she started yapping, I'd shake, this shaky thing I have technical term she hates it so stops barking immediately. She only needs it occasion now- if she starts yapping and won't shut up, out comes the shakey thing!

Didyoumeantobesorude1 · 25/05/2017 20:29

Donquix, they said sorry, and it was quieter for a week or two, but then went back to just the same as before.
IfyouGo, the shaky thing sounds amazing but these people obviously have no interest in doing anything so thoughtful, or they would have done it already.

We live next door to a JR, yaps all the bloody time and takes chunks out of other dogs given the opportunity.

specialsubject · 25/05/2017 20:42

Defra have a useful online guide to this. It starts with a polite word, but you can straight to their form letter. If still ignored it is the council.

With dogs it is train it or shoot it. This noise nuisance is unacceptable.

Haughtycat · 25/05/2017 20:43

Blame the owners. Here's ours, she never barks, she's as good as gold. She was taught as a puppy not to overreact. She will only bark if a stray cat comes into the garden.

Toast3 · 25/05/2017 21:11

I hear you OP...It boils my piss too....one night (11.35pm) one of them was going insane in the garden....its owner was sat in the lounge watching tele with her iPad on her knee, completely ignoring it.....(my neighbours noise backs on to hers and she could see her)....
it beggars belief! Selfish!!

Toast3 · 25/05/2017 21:12

Jesus...neighbours house (not noise) puts prosecco glass down lol

metalmum15 · 25/05/2017 21:16

I get you OP, we're surrounded by barking fuckers. Once one stops the next one starts. I just can't understand how dog owners think it's acceptable, or even why they want to put up with it. We went down the council route a few years ago, it was a pain but the barking did stop. (Shortly before they got rid of it. A dog is for life, not just for Christmas clearly didn't apply to them.)

Pumperthepumper · 25/05/2017 21:20

Definitely not unreasonable, both our neighbours have massive barky dogs and they start every time someone walks up our drive or over the garden. I worry in case we decide to sell, no way would I buy a house with a dog barking either side (obviously they both got them after we moved in)

Roomba · 25/05/2017 21:23

My old neighbour had a JRT from a puppy. The guy was housebound so why he thought a JRT was a great idea I will never know Hmm. It got taken out for a twenty min walk each morning by a local kid and that was it. The poor thing barked all day long and all night often it was very anxious and went crazy if someone even walked past the house. Drove us utterly bonkers along with the rest of the street. Just need a LOT of exercise and time, it's not fair otherwise and they become very neurotic.

shinyredbus · 25/05/2017 21:30

maybe you can speak to neighbour re the barking? I thinking wishing it would die is a little over the top and mean

DopeyDazy · 25/05/2017 21:48

Weve got a noisy choc lab called Bailey next door who barks lots. We call over to him and tell him hes a good boy and he goes back to playing around. Dogs just shouldn't be left alone theyre pack animals.

Luncharmstrong · 25/05/2017 22:05

With you 100% op.

SallyCanWait · 25/05/2017 22:16

Feel a bit bad bad calling my dog a cunt. He's fine when you tell him.to shut up and never barks early or late at night. He barks at the postie and strangers in the house but always pipes down when told.

Argeles · 25/05/2017 22:20

YABVU!!!

It's not the fault of the poor dog to be put outside so much, it's the neighbours who have the problem - maybe have a quiet word with them.
