The Asian ladies that work in nail salons

Please forgive my ignorance. Please!

I had a pedicure today (for the first time in 5 years!)

I was thinking whilst i was there that the majority of that staff in salons I have been to are Asian women. Some of them young.

I've also noticed that in my experience, their English is limited.

I'd like to know if anybody knows if these women are here specifically to do that job?

Or are they here for education? A better future?

I ask because I have never had my nails done by an Asian woman that can speak fluent English.

I had my nails done by a lovely young woman today...i know this is a career choice for many that have a passion for it. But is it for these women in particular or do they hope to gain an education here and an alternative career? If like to think so.

Young girls are trafficked whether one likes to admit it or not.

Well thanks for that amazing and insightful contribution delicious and welcome to Mumsnet. Or did you feel a need to name change just to post that? Confused

toffeeboffin · 27/05/2017 14:40

Same here in Canada.

All Vietnamese, all female, all limited English, which is a bit worrying with the young ones I. E they've been educated here. Or maybe they are told not to make conversation (which I greatly prefer!)

FWIW they are all exceptionally good at pedicures.

The ones I go are just shockingly different in quality get a young guy who was brilliant. Next time the ocndr female and looked crap within a week

From my experience and my family members who are in fact vietnamese and own nail shops, they tend to be majority family members. I know owners that work 7 days a week and members of staff that work 6 or 7. Not because they're forced to but because it's good money. That's why they tend to employ family. Its also easier to work with family than people who aren't. We cook and eat together.

Some people will believe that English is limited because someone may have an accent. We've dealt with racist people making remarks believing that thwy won't understand what's being said. They do understand.

You can say this about any business that's privately owned. Most will pass on through the family and there will always be someone that speaks less English. The majority of vietnamese people I know now are first or seccond generation. There are people however they haven't recently come to the country for a better life and to make money. Just the same as ANY race do

OP here...i avoided commenting again after some nasty replies. But I've been back since and have gained a lot of knowledge. Thank you you everyone who thinks I'm not racist. I really am not. To be honest I was wondering whether to post in the first place because I have low self esteem and i knew a negative reply from some fool would hurt me. That said, most of you understood why I asked and your replies have been fantastic. I won't be going back there again. I'll find a local independent technician. I'll also report said salon to the relevant services, just incase. Thank you again.

The salon I went to today was run by an older man and the ladies working there seemed more at ease when he left for a while

Red flag there OP!!

A lot of nail bars are indeed a front for people trafficking. It's a well known 'thing'. Could be worth reporting it?

deliciousdelight · 02/06/2017 12:09

why do we have to subsidise others and then find ourselves deprived of healthcare etc.

kanikapride · 21/07/2017 18:36

I just experience pure prejudice / borderline racism at an Orpington Nail Salon today
It is interesting to see how Vietnamese nail bar workers treat black customers with little or no respect and clearly show them they are not welcome
This is a long story which I will share in details.....stay tuned.
