To ask when does a baby become a toddler?

I always thought it was when they started 'toddling', but then I thought if an 8 month old baby could walk I wouldn't call them a toddler.

I looked online and some places said one, some places said two. Dd is nearly one, and I don't want want think of her as being a toddler yet, she's still my little squishy baby!

I remember looking at ds1 one day and thinking jeezo your a toddler when did that happen. They change communicate differently act differently and you just know they have moved on from babyhood.

Cow and gate and Emma's diary keep emailing me talking about my toddler. She just turned 1, so I'm guessing around then.
She's not a toddler though, she's my little baby Sad

Ahhh spudlet you are describing exactly how I feel. DS has just turned 2, he was 2 months premature and therefore at the baby stage FOREVER. But now all of a sudden things are getting more fun from the two way conversations to him just getting things.

I'm looking forward to spending a nice summer with him Grin

I'm in my 40s according to my mother I'm still her baby!

My Dd walked at 8 months and running by 10 months. I got very upset when people called her a toddler. Had a cry because she gre up too quickly.

BeeThirtythree · 25/05/2017 06:24

When they start to 'toddle' along. We are on the cusp as I type...123, and fall down! Grin

I wouldn't call an 8-month-old a toddler, but definitely by 15 months or so the term seems apt. I do find it a bit odd when people extend the term to refer to older children. Someone I know calls her 5-year-old a toddler.

I much much prefer the toddler stage to the baby stage. Going ok nature walks, exploring, playing games together... so much fun!

Toddler has to be one the words most appropriate for what it is.

belleandsnowwhite · 25/05/2017 07:24

I would say around 18months.

CuppaSarah · 25/05/2017 07:53

I think around 16-18 months. When they become self aware, until then they're a baby on legs if they're walking Grin

A toddler, is a child that can toddle (walk). It's a description of a developmental stage.

My three-year-old can't walk but she's most definitely a toddler!
