Who puppy walks for guide dogs ?

I ran into a lady with a beautiful chocolate lab puppy in the carpark in my local shopping centre.

We got chatting and she explained that he was a trainee guide dog and she was going to love him and train him for a year before he goes for proper guide dog training.

I expressed interest and she said they are looking for more puppy walkers in our area !

This is probably a no go, as it would be up to DH and whether he would mind me committing to spend a year with the puppy.

The plus points are loving a puppy.

Being able/having to take them everywhere including food shopping, bus, trains, cinema...anywhere a blind person might go.

We have space in our home for their puppy cage. Paved space in our garden for a 'spending space' for 'busy'

Plus all vet, food and expenses are met by the charity. Even boarding costs if you want to go on holiday without the dog.

Plus the local puppy training area for the fortnightly puppy training classes is really close.

We already have a people carrier with a spare seat for the puppy harness or remove the seat to fit in the puppy cage for travelling.

The biggest negative is saying goodbye to the puppy when they move on :( But I have done rescue work with kittens and have experience of handing over kittens to new owners.

The children might be very upset when the puppy moves on. But we neither have the money or time commitment to get a forever family dog and thought this might give them a chance to enjoy having a dog in the house.

I would have to commit to staying home this year, I need to return to work at some point but that point is a little vague at the moment. As childcare costs vastly out way my earning potential atm, in a couple of years this will alter.

Guess I am looking for any advice from puppy walkers out there...what do I need to know ?

Oh it sounds like such a great thing to do!

Do it! We socialise Hearing Dog puppies and there is a great support network. We have made many new friends. It is hard when you say goodbye to the pup and it is hard work, but to see the difference the fully trained dog makes to the recipient makes it all worthwhile - life-changing partnerships!

Apparantly there are loads of rules about when to feed them and related to I letting.

Plus you have to get onto the floor to cuddle them...not let them jump on the sofa.

They have to spend 2/3 hours alone in their cage to get use to it and must sleep.in it at night but the rest of the time they are with you all the time.

Sounds hard work but fun.

Cross posted with iago

How long have you done puppy walking ? Was the application part hard ?

I've done it. It's sad when they go, it's true. Toilet training them (well, not toilet but YKWIM) is the hardest part because they have to be able to poo on command and not otherwise. A big ask! The GDBA laid on puppy training classes for us and others, and paid for a nice new carpet when an adolescent puppy ate ours!

We did it, was brutal when they had to go back! Out of the 6 pups we trained, we ended up with 2 back as pets after 3 or 4 years.

I can only talk for HD but the puppy walking/socialising stage is very similar. We applied in 2012
, then went to witness the mayhem of a couple of puppy classes! We weren't put off, so the socialising trainer came to vet us and check the garden was secure. We got our first puppy within about 6 weeks, I think. We've socialised 5 - 4 out working and one on the Demonstration Team. We're now doing holiday cover for a bit of a break because it is time consuming - but great fun.

Mu123 Did you ask for them back or did they retire?

DH & I are planning to go on one of the puppy training sessions and learn more about the process.

Oh please let us know how it goes, and when we can look forward to cute puppy pictures!

Assuming the charity think we would make suitable carers, I would LOVE to post cute puppy pictures :)
