To be worried about telling work that I'm pregnant

I've worked there since January.. I'm 13 weeks pregnant and haven't told them yet. I'm hoping to tell them tomorrow but I'm worried about their reaction. I've not passed probation yet, but have had meetings saying how I'm an asset to the team etc. The company as a whole is quite family orientated but I just feel awful for getting pregnant so soon after starting my job. I was on the pill so it was unplanned.

When you told your work did they ask you the pregnant related questions there and then such as when will you go on mat leave or did they schedule another meeting?

Why do you have to tell them tomorrow?

VimFuego101 · 21/05/2017 22:42

You don't have to tell them yet; when is your probation up?

Cuppateanosugar · 21/05/2017 22:43

I don't have to but I want to. It would be easier to take time off for appointments otherwise I'm taking them as a holiday and would rather get it done sooner rather than later. I found out at 5 weeks so kept it from them 8 weeks.

Congratulations!
Ive been with the same employer during all 3 of my pregnancies, with them all they didn't request dates etc until I'd handed my matb1 in around 25 weeks.

Cuppateanosugar · 21/05/2017 22:44

July which by then I will have a big bump. It's getting pretty obvious now if I'm honest. It's illegal for them to not pass probation because of pregnancy. And it's documented that I'm hard working asset to team etc etc so they won't be able to pull a fast one

It will be ok, I didn't tell my work till I was 18 weeks, I emailed them in the end at the end of my shift, it was fine in the end

Cuppateanosugar · 21/05/2017 22:45

Thank you user!! Ftm and no clue when they ask that's Brill though. I have grade 4 placenta previa so unless it moves which is unlikely I will have to have a caesarian and maybe even bed rest so not sure when I will be going off yet anyway!

Stella did you just email manager? We are quite a close team so I feel maybe I should just ask her for a quick word and tell her? I haven't said to anyone out loud to their face that I am pregnant yet so I'm nervous

You're probably worrying unnecessarily. I started my new job on 1st Nov and found out on Christmas eve that I was pregnant. Everyone has been lovely and really supportive. I do know how you feel though. I was almost embarrassed telling them. Good luck!

mummc2 · 21/05/2017 22:50

Someone I know was working at a school temporarily when she found out she was pregnant. Wasn't planned as was trying to get first full time teaching job she kept it quiet til around 28 weeks (tiny girl didn't show barely at all) she was offered the job full time and felt she had to tell them, and they were really happy and supportive of her and said to definitely contact them when she was due back to see if they could offer her a position as they loved her!!

Cuppateanosugar · 21/05/2017 22:53

Yes Catherine I feel that really. That's made me feel a bit better thank you x

I had to tell my manager at 8 weeks because i was so sick with it. I went to his room and asked for a quiet word. He said congratulations and offered support about the sickness. I then had to separately arrange a meeting with HR which i had just before 20 weeks to discuss risk assessment and get by date for my second scan agreed. I haven't discussed my formal leaving date with them yet and expect to discuss that when i hand matb1 in at 24 weeks. No-one has said anything negative or put pressure on me for dates. Don't worry it will be fine and congratulations!

I think you're probably worrying unnecessarily too, they'll be pleased & supportive, I know how you feel though, I didn't tell them about my 3rd for ages, felt embarrassed about announcing I was about to take my 3rd year out in the last 6.

Catherinebee85 · 21/05/2017 22:56

I just approached the manager and asked for a quiet word. An email wouldn't have felt right under the circumstances. I felt like I had to tell her it wasn't planned and stuff...probably sounded like a right plank.

Congratulations btw xx

I had to tell my work I was pregnant after having been there about 5 months. I was at that point on a temp contract and didn't give a monkeys what they thought as planned to leave before baby was born. Then they made me permanent and gave me mat pay SmileI am sure you'll be fine.

Lalunya85 · 21/05/2017 22:58

I can relate but it really will be ok. It sounds like they are a nice company and they will probably be very supportive!

Imagine you were a dad expecting a baby - everybody would be thrilled!

But I do know how you feel. I returned to work after a year of maternity leave with my first son. The week I returned, I found out that I was pregnant again, and already 6 weeks along. I effectively only returned to work for about 7 months before going on maternity leave again. I was really worried about telling my manager, but he was nothing other than happy for me (at least that's all he showed me Smile). My boss kept saying how mothers are the most motivated among their employees, and so my pregnancy was a win win situation and I should just go ahead and enjoy it.

Cuppateanosugar · 22/05/2017 21:15

Thanks all. They were abolsutely brilliant and so excited for me. There hasn't been a baby on the team for 20 years!! Only men that went on paternity. So they we re all really good about it and congratulated and excited for me Grin
