Help mums.

Posted this somewhere else to but there always seems to be more traffic on the AIBU so

Just found out we are expecting 😊 We get married in August and I will be 5 months, my dress is a corset style, is this unsafe to wear? I presume it is x

It won't be unsafe - babies are very well cushioned- but it might be extremely uncomfortable for you, and probably look odd. Go for something more forgiving - empire line? - and then you'll save a lot of stress in the run up.

Congratulations on both counts.

My cousin was 5 mts pregnant with twins on her wedding day and she had a tiny bump, you wouldn't have noticed only they announced their pregnancy at the meal. Her dress did not have a corset.(btw you should have seen her bump at 9 mts, poor pet couldn't walk)

Everyone's bump is different at 5 months but honestly I think you would be very uncomfortable wearing corset. Maybe get the dress altered?

FloatyCat · 21/05/2017 10:12

Even if you don't have a noticeable bump at 5 months I think a corset would be fairly uncomfortable, try to change dress style if you can.

Justanothernameonthepage · 21/05/2017 10:12

Is it an internal corset with steel, or simply a lace up panel at the back? If it's not steel, it shouldn't be too awkward for a dressmaker to insert additional elastic panels to allow for the shape change and then you can loosely lace. Best bet is to talk to a dressmaker about options but keep in mind buying a new dress may be easier and cheaper.

Agree with PP if it's your first you probably won't have much of a bump at 5 months so no problem for the baby. But as your ribcage will have started moving out by then you will be uncomfortable and may get short of breath. I would also look at getting it changed somehow.

Thanks for the replies, this baby is our second.

I better book an appointment with an alterations company. I had the dress specially made 🙈

Why would it be unsafe? If tight clothes squashed babies no celeb would ever have one.

I'm 19 weeks pregnant with first, am a size 10/12 and haven't put much weight on at all BUT i have a noticeable bump that people have commented on and i have had to switch to maternity jeans around 16 weeks as i couldn't do up my jeans and even with a hairband round the button it was still a faff - jeans gaping open and sitting too low with my tops too short and generally flashing and alarming the general public. Also had to buy maternity tights, smart trousers for work and a couple of dresses and tops and don't wear non maternity at all except for cardi's. I was really surprised as didn't think I would have a bump (or that people would realise) for a while yet. Oh and boobs much bigger but that was pretty much my first symptom so way before 5 month mark. So everyone's different but based on my experience you would have a noticeable bump by then. When I was trying on wedding dresses (not pregnant) I really didn't like anything too constricting as I wanted to be able to walk about and dance and sit down, would imagine that would be more important at 5 months - it is a bloody long day. Congrats on both counts

I got married at 5.5 months pregnant, dress was corseted but we just made sure it wasn't tight at all around the middle.

PacificDogwod · 21/05/2017 10:32

No, it's not unsafe, but likely would be very uncomfortable.

Looking at possible alterations sounds like a VERY good idea to me.

BeepBeepMOVE · 21/05/2017 10:51

I doubt you have a proper tight lacing steel boned corset you simply mean a fitted, plastic boned bodice that you will wear for one day. It will be perfectly fine, no damage to bump. Might be a bit uncomfortable if your waist line moves.

DoubleR · 21/05/2017 15:30

OP if it's your second your bump will grow more quickly, good luck with the alterations (and the wedding, and the baby!) Flowers
