Kitchen layout feedback

AIBU to ask for feedback on the attached kitchen layout here please? Flowers

The house is a new build and attached are the plans and a 3d from most recent kitchen planner. We will be moving the hob to the inner end of the peninsula leaving the rest of it free for food-prep and seating ... just at a bit of a loss as to how to style the wall of tall units and what we might be missing. Is it all a bit bland?

We will have matt, handleless units, maybe a dark grey and then white or light grey, but not sure which units to have dark!

Any suggestions please?
Thanks!!!

I'd put my lounge where the kitchen is as it's wider

That lounge is just a casual seating area, we will have a separate living room too. The kitchen is definitely staying where it is!

Id have the wall of cupboards take up the whole of that wall from the door down. And take them to the ceiling.

I have been designing my own so done loads of mock ups for myself on iPad apps InteriorDesign and TapGlance. In my kitchen with the tall cabinets I reworked it to have two narrow ones on either side and in the middle I put doors with glass panels in the top. I also did screen shots with different colours so I could compare easily. For us it looked better with darker on the middle and light colours on the tall cabinets.

It is a bit bland but I imagine it won't be once it's lived in.
Not sure about dark cupboards is it a very light room? I wouldn't have the big cupboards dark as it would make them too much for me personally.
It does seem a bit, clumpy, somehow. But I'm not sure why! Bet the other end of the room is gorgeous though

I like the colour and style, but do you cook or bake much? I do and would find the layout very lacking in worktop space, especially if the seating area will be used regularly. Even more so if you're planning on having appliances eg microwave, kettle, toaster sitting out.

Wall of tall units all the way to the ceiling. Leave them pale and bland. More modern.

Don't have wall cabinets over the sink. Also more modern to have no wall cabinets. I'd have the island dark and the ones under the sink and the full wall light.

Personally I don't like having the hob on the island due to splatter, awkward extraction of smells and risk of small hands tipping something over the edge into the pans.

I like having the sink and dishwasher closer to the dining area for ease of plate clearing. Also useful it being on the island when full of ice and wine at parties.

I wouldn't bother with bar stools when you've got seating so nearby and the person sitting there would be so close to the steam, splatter and smell of cooking. People generally don't choose to gather and chat next to the cooker.

Wall colour, artwork and accessories should give it character not the units. You will be happy with the kitchen for more years if it can be made to feel more modern with restyling the accessories. You can't do that so easily with statement units.

Thanks for the replies so far.

House isn't built yet so very hard to imagine the size of the space!

I'm hoping the peninsula will be big enough - its nearly 3m long and 2m deep! We have 2 kids who I imagine will sit there a bit but not all the time as we will have the table close by. Room has a huge glass door to the west and windows to the south and 5m rooflight. Countertops will be white stone so bright regardless of the units I hope!

I would love somewhere to hide appliances actually. Looked into an appliance garage but hard to know where it might go. I hate countertop clutter Smile

Could you have double oven tall unit at the other end of the bank its on? Long worktop down and also under the window too. Hob on the wall side, sink under window, breakfast bar completely clear.

Id also scrap the bar stools and instead run a bench down it which backs on to the counter. Table infront of the bench, chairs other side.

titchy · 20/05/2017 20:38

I'd have an American style fridge freezer in the middle of the full height units - and have pull out units

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 20/05/2017 20:42

We unfortunately can't really have units under the window. If you see from the plans, that wall is actually angled, so it would be really awkward having drawers or presses there not joining at a 90deg angle.

We have been through ALL the kitchen layout permutations and this is the one which makes the best use of space (stupid awkward site ConfusedGrin)
