To think this person is disgusting and irresponsible and shouldn't be allowed a dog

Had to cut my trip out short and come straight home after an incident in pets at home.

Some irresponsible dog owner has let their dog take a big, sloppy shite right in the middle of the floor and walked off and left it. Inevitably multiple people have walked through it, smearing it all across the floor in every direction for a good 3 metre square area. No signs, no staff attending to it or diverting people from walking there so presumably it hadn't been noticed yet.

It was right in front of all the small animal cages at the front of the shop, and the only reason i didn't walk right in to it first entering the shop is there was a big crowd there looking at the little pets so i went to see the reptiles first. Coming from the other side i just noticed in time right before i stood in one of the big smears trailed down the aisle.

I only saw it because force of i habit i look at the floor when i'm walking as i have severe OCD about germs (exclusively pee and crap germs) and have to make sure i don't stand in anything, but i usually only do this out doors.

Cue me almost having a massive panic attack while i frantically scour the floor of where i had walked to see if there were more smears, and examining the bottom of my shoes and the hem of my jeans that unfortunately go on the floor in these shoes, but are the only ones i can get on atm, trying to see if there's even the minutest bit got on me. Noticed whilst doing this just a few feet from the crap pile a dog (presumably same one, i hate to think there are two such shit owners been through there so close together) had pissed all up the corner of the shelves and was a puddle on the floor, which i had walked right past, so now panicking i've stood in pee as well and shite.

There's no way the owner of the offending dog didn't notice what it had done, and they've made no attempt to clean it up and just left it to be traipsed through, with a lot of kids in because it's a weekend. If they go out with their dog they should have clean up provisions, if they had ran out they were in a shop that sells poop bags and such, and if they had no money on them they could have asked staff for some paper towels or other cleaning supplies to clear up. At the very least, they could have played dumb it wasn't their dog and alerted a member of staff there was dog mess in the middle of the floor, not that some poor staff member should have to clean it up.

This has completely ruined my day, and my anxiety is now through the roof, with intrusive thoughts that will continue for god knows how long about if there was anything on my shoes/jeans that i didn't see, if i've walked that into the house, if its all over the car mat, etc, which will happen every time i go out as i have to stand on the mats again and can't bin them because it's a rental car. I've had to change the jeans i'd only had on 2 hours and spray disinfectant over all my carpets and floors where i've walked, and the car mat, but i still don't feel things are "clean" and feel i'm contaminating everything. Who knows how this will also affect all the other people who did stand in it, or those like me who can't be 100% certain they didn't.

AIBU to think people who don't clean up after their dogs are vile and irresponsible and not properly caring for it, and shouldn't be allowed to have them?

You're right, they are disgusting and irresponsible. I'm sorry it has caused you so much distress. Last time I was in Pets at Home I watched as a huge dog cocked his legs and pissed all over the calendars on a stand.

lavei · 20/05/2017 18:16

How do you know that the owner didn't know?
It's possible they were looking at the animals or at the tills and the dog (I imagine) would be on an extendable lead so easily could have dropped one. It's not the nicest smelling shop so possibly wouldn't have noticed.

YAOR. No need to let some dog poop ruin your day

lavei are you not picking up on the Ops clear massive panic attack on this? Sad Ill mental health is horrendous. You've got my sympathy Op.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 20/05/2017 18:24

"No need to let some dog poop ruin your day"
Excuse me, but i have a genuine mental illness, it is not a choice to feel the way i do about this, i have zero control over it.

Yes but because you suffer from anxiety about things like this, people can't own dogs? This is overreacting. Accidents happen.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 20/05/2017 19:20

I hate to break it to you but if you have severe OCD about germs Pets at Home is not the place for you. I've never not seen a dog having a little wee in there. So many animals pass through they really can't help it. Even our dog had a wee in there when he was a pup.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2017 19:20

Yes, accidents happen - but the owner should have made sure they told Pets At Home staff, so they could have put signs out and cleaned it up asap. I don't buy, for me second, that the dog could have done it withoutnthe wonder noticing - surely, in a shop, you keep your dog close to you?

I don't suffer from OCD, but would have found this very nasty, so I am not at all surprised that @AlmostAJillSandwich was somuoset by this.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2017 19:21

Bah - 'so upset' not somuoset (whatever the heck that is).

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 20/05/2017 19:25

I've personally never seen a dog piss in a shop.

Do dogs generally piss indoors? Is that why you can always smell when a house has a dog living there?

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 20/05/2017 19:28

But this is one of those times when we don't know that they didn't tell staff.

If we think the staff didn't know about it then evidently none of the people who stepped in it told them either.

Seems more likely the staff just didn't respond quickly enough

fessmess · 20/05/2017 19:29

It's just dog poo. If you get stressed by it then don't go there. No need to spoil your day.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2017 19:32

Seriously, @fessmess? You think there's nothing wrong with someone letting their dog do an enormous shite on the shop floor, and not doing anything about it? Really?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/05/2017 19:34

@Snoopysimaginaryfriend - I am assuming they didn't tell the staff, because, if they had, the staff would have put out one of those Wet Floor signs, to warn people, so they didn't slip in it and hurt themselves.

LittleMisslikestobebythesea · 20/05/2017 19:36

That is horrible and I completely understand how you feel, I have OCD and hate dog poo and would have similar thoughts to you Flowers

The posters saying don't let it spoil your day have no idea how much OCD affects us, I know it's not rational but I can't control my thoughts.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 20/05/2017 19:37

It IS disgusting and they should have alerted a staff member, if they were aware of course but I do think you are being rather over dramatic.

Haffiana · 20/05/2017 19:42

Excuse me, but i have a genuine mental illness, it is not a choice to feel the way i do about this, i have zero control over it.

Hell yes, tell ALL dog owners to get rid in.

You do have control over your own sense of entitlement.

FloofyCat · 20/05/2017 20:16

Gosh yes, that massive entitlement of expecting owners to pick up a massive dog shit from a shop floor Hmm

How on earth is OP in the wrong for thinking that is disgusting? I swear some people just like to be contrary on a Saturday night...

Haffiana · 20/05/2017 20:53

OP has described in some detail a MH episode which was triggered by a dog shit in a shop. OP is further stating she is particularly entitled to overreact because she has a MH issue.

The MH episode is NOT the fault of the dog owner. The dog shit IS the fault of the dog owner. There is a difference. If she was only complaining about the dog shit in the OP, then why mention the MH?

limitedperiodonly · 20/05/2017 21:46

Do you think you're cut out to own a dog if you have a panic attack at the sight of a runny dog shit episode?

When your dog or child or even you gets the urge for a runny shit, there's not a lot that can be done to stop it.

The owner probably went to get help to clean it up - meanwhile dozy people walked in the shit.

Don't get a cat either. They puke a lot.

Siwdmae · 20/05/2017 21:52

Yes, it's disgusting, yes the dopey owner should have been watching their dog and got someone to clean it up, but yabu to expect Pets at Home to be clean! You can order online rather than go to the store.

WildBelle · 20/05/2017 21:54

Joffrey - not generally, but there's so many dogs that have pissed been in there before them that PaH is just too tempting not to do it for a lot of them

ElphabaStrop · 20/05/2017 21:56

The title of your thread is BU to be honest. How do you know the (possibly mortified) owner (a) wasn't taking their sick dog to the vets at the back of the store OR (b) hadn't gone to tell a staff member what had happened? Dogs do get diarrhoea sometimes and they are allowed in PAH.

I'm absolutely not condoning non-clearing up dog owners, btw. And of course it's not your fault you have MH problems. You are entitled to be miffed. But YABU to decide that the dog owner is "disgusting and irresponsible and shouldn't be allowed a dog" when you don't know the circumstances.

limitedperiodonly · 20/05/2017 21:59

Do you have a dog OP? I ask because if not, your horrific introduction to the realities of dog ownership today might be a pointer towards a tidier hobby
