To think that some people on MN will be conflicted

Name changed for this one.

I've noticed that common opinions on MN seem to be:

  • Of course everyone here will vote Labour!

  • Pensioners are rich and lazy, and shouldn't expect hard-working people to pay for their lifestyle!

The Labour Manifesto says that, if they win, they will keep the triple lock on state pensions, and keep the winter fuel payment for ALL pensioners.

So - I wonder how many people on here will be voting Labour and then complaining about Labour policies?

It's perfectly sensible to vote for that party with which you most agree.

It's also sensible to speak out regarding the policies that you do not agree with.

If we insisted only only voting if we agreed with every single policy, turnout would be very low.

Moussemoose · 20/05/2017 10:39

You vote for the best fit. Most MPs don't fully support every single policy their part espouse.

It really is not that complicated.

And it's better than voting to remove food from poor children to fund Grammar schools for the middle classes.

Much better than not voting at all.
Much better than voting Tory and then moaning about hideous Tory policies.

And anyway, what wrong with feeling conflicted?!
Most situations are not black and white and recognising complexities is not a bad thing.

You sounds like a stirrer.
Hmm

What Trills said.

Life is not black and white.

wonkylegs · 20/05/2017 10:43

Generally I vote for least worst as I find most political parties do lots of things I don't agree with. There is no one party that makes me go 'wow they just get it'
I just have to balance up what matters the most to me and go with whoever comes closest or in the current political climate whose policies are the least worst option as I think the current crop of politicians themselves are all a bit dire.

Ktown · 20/05/2017 10:43

Well I was a natural labour supporter but their policies don't add up. There is a lack of maths in general in politics and it is embarrassing.
Agree I am conflicted.

pinkandorangeroses · 20/05/2017 10:45

MN used to be very left leaning but I think that's changing, perhaps as a reaction to the "selfish Tory bastards" posts. There are still a few about and still a few MNetters who try to personally place their misfortune on your shoulders but it's becoming more balanced.

DonkeyOaty · 20/05/2017 10:45

I don't seem to recall much along lines of pensioners are rich and lazy.

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 20/05/2017 10:52

I have never read any post that called all pensioners rich and lazy and mumsnet is no longer the left wing London centric site it was when I joined 10 years ago.

There's a huge difference of opinions and lifestyles which make it far more interesting.

On your points you vote for party with a credible front bench and leader as it's no use having wonderful policies if you can't see how they can be delivered properly.

I won't be voting labour unfortunately as they won't be able to deliver any of their promises as the sums just don't add up and Corbyn is not a leader. The European ministers would make mince meat of him.

Love the policies though and am very conflicted.

Dianneabbottsmathsteacher · 20/05/2017 10:54

And out of interest why did you name change and why did you mention it?

pinkandorangeroses · 20/05/2017 10:55

Actually, I think most people who speak about politics online, whether on forums or on social media like Facebook or twitter lean left. Mumsnet is no different there.

However recently I think Corbyn has made it socially acceptable to be a Tory.

harderandharder2breathe · 20/05/2017 11:03

I expect most people (not just on MN) are conflicted and not just about this election but about every election. Very very few people agree with every single policy of a particular party. So it's about weighing up which is the best option or at least the least worst option

I disagree with several labour policies and I doubt the ability of Corbyn to get much done while his own party is so divided against him.

I agree with some Tory policies but I can't stand their constant policy of making things better for the rich and worse for the poor.

I refuse to vote Lib Dem with a leader who thinks gay people are bad and puts religion above common sense.

I refuse to vote UKIP because I'm not a racist twat.

I don't know much about Plaid Cymru or the Green Party but they have so little voice at Westminster that it feels pointless.
