WIBU to keep DS off school tomorrow?

DS is 7, in Y2.

His sister is Y6 but will be off tomorrow anyway as she has quite a nasty virus with cough/headache.

We have to take DCat to the vet tomorrow to be PTS. Her back legs have given out, vet administered steroids as last ditch effort this morning but there's been no change (she is a very elderly cat). I'm making the call to PTS as she is still eating/drinking/purring and don't want her to get to the stage of pain or extreme distress.

DS is devastated about DCat, he adores her, and has just cried himself to sleep. He will be devastated at being sent to school tomorrow knowing his sister is coming to the vet with me on DCat's final journey. WIBU to keep him off and let him come too so he doesn't feel excluded as well as devastated?

They should both be in school.
The DD has a nasty virus so it would be irresponsible to send her to school!

Yes let him stay off school.

Crumbs "They should both be in school." What, the daughter too so she can pass her nasty virus on to everyone else?

Sorry to hear about your beloved pet, OP.

Welshmaenad · 18/05/2017 23:35

Thank you for the condolences. She's a lovely old thing and I'm so sad. She's utterly dotty, meowls constantly and poos on my bathroom mat as some kind of hobby, but she's hilarious and loving and we'll miss her a lot. She's had her favourite stinky fishy tray food, lots of salmon treats and tons of cuddles this evening and she's gone to sleep in her favourite fluffy bed Sad

crumbs for you Biscuit

So sorry OP. Yes definitely keep him off school. It's one day. I think it's important he's there with you.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 18/05/2017 23:50

When DBro and DSIL put their beloved family dog to sleep she had a pound of hamburger for her last dinner and a pound of bacon for her last lunch, poor thing. They were in pieces. For them, I think they were glad their DS's were not at the vets with them, but in your case OP it sounds like you have thought about it carefully. I would just say to maybe make sure there are enough distractions for DS for the rest of the day after the vet and your "something nice", just so he is not concentrating only on that all day.

I see these threads a lot, parent's worrying about keeping children off school for one day. Think we're made to feel guilty (DD is still a baby so I've got that joy to come). My mum was a massive hippy, I missed loads of days, and I've got two degrees.

Anyway, off topic!

In this instance your DS emotional wellbeing is more important and the death of a pet needs to be handled carefully. YANBU to keep him off school for one day. Flowers

bumblebee I agree. I only have one degree, hoping to do a masters, I bunked off a lot and hated school!

Just wanted to thank everyone for their kindness and update.

DS stayed off today, we took DCat to the vet. We were put straight into a private room and had time with her then the lovely vet nurse took the DC into another private room and have them a drink and a lollipop whilst DCat was put to sleep, I stayed with her. It was very peaceful and she lay in my arm and purred to the end.

We've brought a picnic to the forest park, DD isn't up for play but DS is tearing up the zip wire. They are sad but ok and glad they came to say goodbye.

Sounds like it went ok. When we had our beloved DDog pts, our DC came to the vets to say goodbye but they didn't stay in the room. I think it's very important to involve the DC and that you did the right thing. Flowers

Thanks for the update, had been thinking about you. Glad it was peaceful and DCat was comfortable and purring. Hope you're all doing ok Flowers.
